Chicago Jobs
« on: January 10, 2011, 11:17:12 AM »
I am a Marquette alum and recent grad (class of 2010). I am currently working in Chicago, however I am looking for a new opportunity. If any other MU alums could help me out or point me in a direction I would really appreciate it.

You may want to be a little more specific about your interests.  I mean, a McDonalds in Dubuque actually qualifies as a "new opportunity," but I don't think that's what you have in mind.

Like Sultan, I'm not exactly sure what you're looking for specifically, but indeed.com is an excellent job search website. It pulls together job postings from various other job search engines.

Yes,
What's your degree in and what are you interested in pursuing?

Will you move away from CHI?

Since you're from the southside, have you thought about slinging crack?

i would try the MU alumni connection website before consulting this group of yahoos, just FYI :)  you can actually tailor your search to alum that meet your criteria (i.e., alumni working in marketing in the greater Chicagoland area...).  And of course the Career Services office is always a great resource, though I'd guess you know about that already having just graduated ;)

This is very true.  If you want some help though, best thing you can do is just network your ass off.  And hit up the Circles events in Chicago.  A lot of people actually go and you get to meet a bunch of people.  Also, join the MU Alumni Group in Chicago.  That should be your starting base for networking in Chicago.  Then, you start going to events that are non-MU.  Networking is the best way to find the next opportunity but its like a plant.  Exchanging cards is planting a seed.  It takes a lot of time and effort develop good relationships.  I actually hit up circles and do some Alumni stuff every now and then.  PM me if you see one your interested in and I'll try and meet you out at one.

I'm trying to keep this as unpolitical as possible, but after what happened in the middle of the night last night in Springfield, Illinois, why would anyone want to live in this state any more? Unreal.

Agreed. Good time to be selling a home within the I-94 corridor in Kenosha County.

Far from shocking as it what weve come to expect from the IL left.  But I have a question regarding tax filing.  Does IL & Sconnie still reciprocate as far as state income tax goes?  One might consider that monthly Amtrak pass - working in Chicago, but living in Packer Country.

Yes... income tax reciprocation is still on the books.  You pay state tax where you reside.

On a related note -- The wife and I considered moving to Pleasant Prairie or Kenosha area about a year ago but decided against it because of the progressive tax structure in Wisconsin.  Even though cost of living and property taxes are slightly lower across the border, the WI income tax actually made it cheaper to live in Illinois.  The cutoff for us was about $90,000-95,000 AGI for our target house price range, i.e. if you earned more than $90k combined, your WI income tax would exceed the tax and COL savings of living across the border.  Not anymore.  If I was a property owner in P.P. or Kenosha within reasonable distance of the Keno or Winthrop Harbor Metra stations looking to sell my home, I would be praying night and day that the Springfield Moron Club raises taxes.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

I've been looking at the same option, now it's more appealing. You can also get more home for you dollar across the border.

You guys realize that the state income tax in Illinois will still be lower in Illinois than it is for most of us in Wisconsin even after the big increase right?

Illinois will be a flat 5%. Unless you are making under 10K your taxes are still less in Illinois than in Wisconsin.

Years ago I sold my house in New Berlin and was transferred to ILL. A year later Wisc started coming after me for taxes. It seems there was a law that if you sold your house at a profit and moved from Wisconsin, you owed Personal Income Taxes on the profit. I argued that it was unconstitutional to no avail still contesting it until I moved to the East Coast and never heard anything again. Probably a warrant for my arrest (beside the one for parking tickets)

The sale of any asset/investment generates a capital gain if sold for more than your basis, and capital gains are taxable income no matter if you sell currency, stocks, gold, or real estate.  This should have been explained by your real estate agent, attorney and/or accountant before you sold your home.

The IRS gives you a $250k ($500k if married filed jointly) exemption for the sale of your primary dwelling if you've lived there for at least two of five years and haven't applied the exemption to another property within the last two years.  So unless you sold your home for more than $250,000 than you paid for it ($500,000 if you're married) and meet the criteria above, you probably don't owe anything to the federal government; however, Wisconsin may be a different story.  If you don't meet the criteria above and sold at a profit, then there's nothing unconstitutional about it... you sold an investment at a profit, and you're required to pay the tax.

I would highly suggest talking to an accountant (or whoever did your taxes in Wisconsin)... no sense in having a tax lien or warrant taken out against you if you did nothing wrong.  Even if you owe something, a good tax attorney or accountant may be able to get the amount owed reduced (or set up a payment plan).

Believe me, delinquent taxes are something you don't want on your record, especially since it's probably the only crime where you can avoid a conviction simply by rectifying the matter beforehand.  Aside from the fact that tax evasion is a felony, interest and penalties will continue to accrue, and eventually you will be tracked down.  White collar prison is still prison.
