Key move by TC last night: Cubillan guarding Mason
« on: March 08, 2007, 09:43:59 AM »
Mason torched Wesley last night.........when TC put Cuby on Mason at the 12 minute mark last night, Mason's game suffered.  smart move by TC -- and nice work by Cuby to put out the fire

I noticed that and was surprised by that move as I didn't think Cooby was a great defensive player and Mason had a huge height advantage which hurt us on that in-bounds play.  I am concerned about Matthews defense.  He seems to lose focus on occasion and did not play Mason well at all last night.

You don't think DC is a good defender???  What team have you been watching this year?

all year Cube has been a heck of a defender, this move has worked in previous games, he shut down Scottie Reynolds, after Reynolds torched anyone that guarded him for the first part of the game.  I have never got why people on this board rip on Cube's D, I think he is the best ball defender we have, and is good at shutting a player down, lets do that now on Ramon, and beat Pitt, clearly the best team in the Big East, again

I've seen negative comments on this board in the past about his defensive play.  That is what I was referring to.  He certainly was great last night.

well, something worked......Mason only scored three points in the last 12 minutes of action, all from the line (one on a silly foul by Wesley about 25 feet from the basket).  Cuby certainly disrupted Mason's rhythm

all year Cube has been a heck of a defender,

I agree.  He's generally very good - two thing that hurt his D sometimes.  1) sometimes he plays too close to go for the steal or deflection, and then gets blown by. 2) other times he doesn't switch right (or helps too much? maybe both) and leaves his man wide open for a 3.

Regardless, he plays with an energy on D that you wish the whole team would show.

Cubey's D is great...any guy that is always clapping in the guys face he's covering and barking at him gets the thumbs up in my book.  Cubey's confidence and sense that he belongs in the Big East from day one has been amazing.

He has been a steal for TC, considering his "ranking" coming into the year.  Just goes to show that high school rankings really can be worthless.

Wasn't the greatest move.

He has height over Cubes. Sure, Cubes might have held in check for a while, but when SJU wisened up and saw a mismatch, they threw to Mason under the basket while a helpless Cubes wouldn't defend the 4 fter basket.
