Buzz stated. "I know our guys are scared to foul somebody but you still need to guard someone."  I have noticed this during the second half tonight and during stretches during the Duke and Zags game..  Many of the guys seem to scared to foul rather than just play hard defense.

Buzz takes the blame for not explaining what "us" is to the newbies..  He also explained that the newcomers have no idea what is going on in terms of preperations, reasons for what they are doing etc. and that he needs to expain it better to them.

He did have a discussion with DJO about his shots not falling.  It must have worked.

Great interview, I stayed in the car until after the garage light went out listening to Buzz. I think that it really brought up a great factor that I often don't think of. Yes, our team is young. Key players, like Vander, Crowder, Junior, and Otule don't have much experience at this level. We see the talent is there. We already know what DJO and Jimmy can do, and at times most everyone else in the first ten guys has looked like they have star potential. Even the much-maligned Erik Williams has had spurts where he looked really, really good this year. But they haven't put it together yet. Fine, I can deal with that, because it's not just them who are young.

Buzz is young and inexperienced as a head coach. One year at New Orleans, and this is just his third year at Marquette. He's a dynamite recruiter who has given us a more talented roster than we've had in ages, and because of that it's easy to be disappointed by the results of the past week. I know that I have been. But listening to Buzz tonight, he talked about things he needs to do as a coach, and I think the lessons have been there for him as well. As the years go on, I think we will be less likely to see a schedule where we open with 7 games in 14 days...looking at the top 25, I think only Pitt has played as many as we have, and that's largely because they played two games before we got to our first one. I also think Buzz will get better at preparing guys for stretches like this.

We're young from the top on down, and that's fine. We won the game tonight. This team easily could have folded in the last few minutes, and then we'd really be beside ourselves. Instead, they found a way to get the win. My expectation is that two, three, five, ten years from now, our worries will be less and less. Just as long as Buzz stays here and stays happy, I think that it will be a learning process and constant improvement from everyone, including the coaching staff.

Maybe even the MUScooper's posts will improve?  Ha ha... No way, I cant believe that thought just crossed my mind for about a second...

.......
I should edit this to include the fact that reading the comments never ceases to be quite entertaining.

No question youth is a big part of this.  Youth and inexperience at the DI level.  No argument there.

That's what makes it frustrating as well.  You see moments of brilliance and moments you just scream.

The boys need to grow up quickly, only a few cupcakes left and the juggernaut begins.

Good points.  When the 3 Amigos graduated, I was pretty pissed that we never were able to make a tourney run with them.  Then, going into last season, I realized how lucky I was to have watched 3 tough, classy kids compete for MU for 4 years and just wanted us to stay competitive.  Last year's team performed beyond expectations (and was probably more fun to watch than any team with DJ, Wes, or Jerel).

I've been as frustrated as anyone (tonight included) but there is a definite light at the end of the tunnel here.  We do play tough.  Nothing that is wrong with our team shows a lack of effort to me.  We've seen enough of Buzz to think that he'll get through to the guys and they'll respond.  Get Jimmy playing the free throw line to break the 2-3 like Wes did his senior year.  Jimmy can hit that mid-range shot and it'll open things up quickly.

We have a young and largely inexperienced team. We have already played 7 games. Practiced started October 15th. When McGuire was coach practice also started October 15th, but you could not play a real game before December 1st. There was a lot more time to concentrate on getting better in practice, before you ever played a game. Once the season starts practices focus more on preparing for your opponent than they do with having to make your team better.
We now have a week to prepare for the next game, which will give Buzz time to work on team weaknesses.
