Quote from: rosiak-- And finally, MU hosted 6-3 guard Jamal Ferguson of Norfolk, Va. on an official visit earlier this week.

Considered a rising prospect in the Class of 2012, Ferguson boasts an incredible 6-10 wingspan.

Holy shiznit! 6'10" wingspan?!?

That is weird, but I do wish we got the CBE treatment in March...automatically making the Final 4.

Wow,
Lots of recruiting in the Hampton Roads area...who's the lead guy for VA recruiting?

GGGG

Nice report on Junior.  Jamail sounds like he might need some coaching to get him to stop settling for jumpers.

Are kids in the class of 2012 able to go on official visits already? I thought it was usually the summer before and during your senior year.

I think you miss-read the article. It says the consolation game is at 6:45, followed by the championship game. That doesn't mean we're in the consolation game, that's just the only time that is know for sure. If you look at the schedule itself it say TBA for the opponent, time.

The article has been changed since I posted....pretty sure I can read and copy and paste.

couple of things....

As far as visits...anyone can visit anywhere anytime as long as it is an unofficial vist...ie the kid pays for it himself.  No gae limit no time limit.  Official visits are reserved for high School seniors and can only be taken when school is in session.  Top players that commit early, ie branden dawson, never take an official before committing.  he will most likely take an offical during the fall and go to a football game or something...or maybe he will not.  it's only a twoand a half hour drive up 94 for him

Secondly, I would take the summer pro-am results and stats with a heavy heavy heavy grain of salt.  remeber these guys are playing against woefully inadequate competiton.  This is no different than these guys scoring 30 a game in HS and then struggling to see the court in the BE.  Its great to be able to play in a summer league and play against somone different, etc. but please, please, please dont read too much into it.  I have read a couple posts by Silver Warrior on the other board simply in full lather about how good these guys are.  Ewill has gone from never playing to a double double machine....gardner has gone from a 3 star non top 100 player to scoring 39!!  Buycks put up 41 the other day!!

nothing i ever saw from Buycks last year would tell me any differently....that is that he could score 41 aaginst abunch of Juco and D3 or low level D1 players.  He is simply quicker and  better athlete than anyone else on t he court(sans the otherMU players) and its not even close.  A 7th man type BE player will and should toy with Juco and Non high major D1 players like they are children.  That why he is in the BE and they are D2.

no different that maurice acker as a 17 year old freshman scoring 13 a game and toying with the MAC conferecne on his way to a freshman of the Year award.   yet 3 years later playing the point for Mu as we go what 2-7 down the stretch as a 21 year old Senior?  Now this year he did an admirable job and shot the ball well and did not turn it over but still only scored 4 a game.  But the point remains he can score 13 a game as a 17 year old kid in the MAc and score 4 a game as a 22 year old 5th year player who played due to injury at a wholly different level.

No doubt the pro am games are a great dose of Mu basketball for the summer and a great outlet for the players and fans.  but please keep all expectations in check despite what soem posters that have apparently very little concept of the difference of levels of competion have to say.

What are you talking about? Per the MU Wiki, Acker averaged 9 points a game last year. I understand your point, and agree with your overall argument, but come on. The kid put up 23 in a game against BE competition. Anyone who watched MU Bball last year could tell you that Mo played excellently and looked more than capable of playing at a high major school. Your post inaccurately and unfairly represents his performance. Maybe I'm nit-picking, but I don't think so.

No doubt there's a need to temper enthusiasm based on the format/competition at the Pro-Am. However, skills are skills. I'm going into this watching individual skills, and if they've improved. Such as Otule's hands, DJO's ballhandling, Vander's jumpshot, Williams' court awareness, etc. In that vein, it's a bit more useful.

Not really i see it every day.  plyers that are scoring 20-30 a game for school teams, never turning the ball over, stealing the ball left and right from the other team, rebounding and assisting seemingly on every play that they dont score.  Simply looking like a HS schooler playing with kindergarteners can then go play against top notch AAU competion and be the absolute inverse, ...turning it over missing contested shots all day , not rebounding etc. etc, etc and ending up with a terrible stat line all the while looking like he has not place on the court.  and like you said dropping passes , missing shots etc.  that you would never think that player would do.  Basketball is a funny game in the fact that the difference form one level to another is so exponential and a player can go from looking like a star on one court to looking like a fumbling boob on the next.

No they will not....that is why I found it humorous that the article already had us in the consolation game.

I seem to recall that we lost to South Florida in 2009.

Not during Acker's time of starting in place of ajame's because of James's injury. Canadiandimes was trying to point out our bad record and saying it was because Ackerman played bad at Pg, which wasn't the case at all. He did a solid, but not great, job in those games and the fact is the competition was EXTREMELY tough and the only game we would've won with James running the point instead of Ackerman was Syracuse.
