Wesley Matthews was ‘NBA’ all along

I feel further vindicated upon reading that the Portland Trail Blazers have signed Wesley Matthews to a five-year, $34 million offer sheet.

While all professional athletes in this country are ridiculously and embarrassingly overpaid, it says plenty that the Trail Blazers have chosen to invest so heavily in Matthews.

I have said since Matthews' freshman season -- and written here for years -- that he has much greater pro potential than Jerel McNeal or Dominic James.

Many here ridiculed this opinion, with some saying that I was displaying my basketball ignorance by writing that Matthews will go far in the NBA while McNeal and James did not have the stuff -- at least back then -- to make an NBA roster.

Many here wrote that Matthews would be the last of those three to make the NBA, and that Matthews' only hope of playing professionally would be in another country.

I do not run a Web site or a blog dedicated to athletics or a certain team. I am not a coach or a former coach. But I do recognize ability and potential.

Many here wrote that I was a fool for predicting Matthews' NBA success and for writing that McNeal and James -- at least back then -- were not "NBA."

I knew what I was seeing in Matthews. I knew that he was "NBA" and that he would be a heck of a pro.

I am not asking anyone here for a pat on the back. I am obviously doing that myself. And it feels pretty good.

Sorry, thought some people would find it interesting that he's out here in Vegas. He was also with another MU guy but for the life of me couldn't remember his name. It also explains why he wasn't at the Pro-Am.

Everyone on this board pointed out the strengths and weaknesses of all of the Three Amigos and how that would play out in the NBA.  No one would ever argue that Wes' size compared to the other 3 is an asset.  Things transpired to the point where that was needed on a team in Utah.

To make a vague prediction about three guys who are borderline NBA talents and say Wes had the most "pro-potential" or "go far" in the NBA does not exactly make anyone a fortune teller.  You can't make vague predictions like "go far" and then point to whatever happens as constituting "go far."

Your repeated self vindication postings must be tied to some personal ridicules and/or embarrassments--- here , or in life..

I really hope you find  what is lacking -- but I dont think a message board , is a very good place to expose this...maybe the superbar...as the post wasnt about Wes or MU basketball---it was about you, ....

I find it interesting that some people choose slam MU Avenue for this post.  Like he mentions in his own post, it is a bit self-aggrandizing or "pat on the back material."  However, good for him for calling out those who slam people around this board and then calling them out when they are wrong.

There have been numerous times around here that self-appointed experts slam people for their opinions.  When they are later wrong there is no apology or admission.  It is the equivalent of a completely untrue newspaper story written with no later retraction.

Seems like some people around here don't like their own medicine.

Matthews is in the NBA and every MU alum should be thrilled--I know I am. But I wouldn't go as far to say that he's "a heck of a pro." As for the boasting, nobody cares, but you. However, if you found writing this to be a cathartic experience, then I'm glad you did.
