Some background coming in is amazing.  Texas was at the altar and going to leave.  They had made up their mind this morning but reversed course early this afternoon.  A number of people, conferences, television execs, others (Paul Tagliabue) pleading with them not to start the chain reaction.

As stated before, there was nothing "simple" about any of this.  Glad it's worked out....so far.  Still precarious as hell long term.

Me thinks that's going to be enough for Kansas, et al to stay in the Big 12...

for now.

Sounds to me like texas never wanted to leave and just used threat to increase their piece of pie and possibly start own channel.

I wonder if Colorado and Nebraska could reverse their decisions. I would not want Nebraska to, because the Big 10 would then be looking for a 12th team. However, Colorado acted quickly so they were not left behind. Now because the league is not dissolving they have to pay the big buyout fee. Also sounds like Big 12 will have more TV money. They could add Memphis to get to 12, if Colorado only came back.

GGGG

There is not a chance Nebraska would come back.  Too much bad blood.

I think A&M should have taken the SEC deal though.

Staying in Big12 Lite is a home run for Texas ... they already get a disproportionate share of existing Big12 revenues and that will continue with a larger pool to pull from.  Add in the fact that they continue to own their own distribution rights -- the $$ could get silly big.  A&M shoulda sacked up and moved on.  The delta between UT and the rest of the 9 dwarfs will only expand year to year.

EDIT:  looks like revenues, outside of distribution, are equal.  good.

Colorado doesn't want back in.  They've wanted the Pac Ten for a long long time.

Money quote: "Dr. Loftin, Please melt down your Aggie ring down and turn it into a nose ring so the sips can lead you around easier."

(sips being a derogatory term for anybody associated with UT)

^ Sips is short for "tea sippers" which is one of the derogatory names used by Aggie grads to refer to UT grads. The other is the fact that A&M fans will never call it UT or the University of Texas....to them it is tu or texas university....even refer to it in their fight song....known as the Aggie War Hymn.

"Good bye to texas university

So long to the orange and the white

Good luck to dear old Texas Aggies

They are the boys who show the real old fight

"the eyes of Texas are upon you"

That is the song they sing so well

Sounds Like Hell

So good bye to texas university

We're gonna beat you all to......."

a buddy of mine is an Ok St alum. he said texas was only looking for leverage in their tv deal. i told my buddy big 12 needs to get back to 12. go after tcu, arkansas or memphis. he said memphis would be sweet, but both ark and tcu don't want in. this all totally helps MU hoops boys. this was very welcome news. hopefully this shizzz stops at 12 teams for most conferences...

Without conference expansion beyond 12, there was no SEC deal to accept.
