Hayward To Compete In Final Four Dunk Contest, All-Star Game

Marquette University senior Lazar Hayward has been selected to participate in ESPN's Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships and the Reese's College All-Star Game as part of the NCAA's Final Four festivities this week in Indianapolis.

You would think he would compete in the 3-point shooting comp. I never saw Lazar as an out-of-the-gym dunker. any thoughts?

I always liked in 2006 when Novak was the tallest person there and was there for the 3 point contest.

Lazar had some awesome in game dunks this year but I don't think he can win it.  Who are the other senior dunkers?

According to the teaser for the article, he is going to do both.  Along with playing in the All-star game.

The guy that runs those events spoke in my Sports Marketing class.  He is a Marquette graduate and said that he always makes sure Marquette is well represented.  i.e. Lazar this year, Wes last year, Novak, and Diener in past years.

He didn't even take part in the Marquette Madness slam dunk contests did he?

I agree, it will be strange to see him in the dunk contest, and even in the 3pt contest considering Mo was a much better 3pt shooter this season and also a Sr.  I think I would prefer to see him in it and Zar in the allstar game.  No offense to Zar but he does a lot of things really well but you have to be a standout dunker or an automatic 3pt shooter.

That said can't wait to see him in the allstar game!

They still need to get people to watch it, and though Lazar isn't necessarily "star quality," he is an All-American and somewhat of a known name.  Plus, you get the gimmick of having him in both which gives the announcers something to fixate on.  Having someone like Mo would be a little obscure.  If the event were purely about sooting percentages and leaping ability, you probably would have a lot of no names.

Fulce won I think.

Yup, with Acker's assist from the stands...or something like that.  I wasn't there, but I saw some of the videos.

Are these events only for seniors?  Because you could throw in DJO for both the 3PT contest and dunk contest instead of Lazar, but Lazar most definitely deserves to at least play in the all-star game.

Is Mo that obscure? Doesn't everyone know he was the smallest player in the Big East?

Well, I guess that would fit my, "giving the announcers something to fixate on," criteria.

I understand where you are coming from and I'm not campaining for Mo to be in it but I just find it odd because Zar wasn't the best 3pt shooting starting Sr. on his own team (side note because i'm lazy right now: did Cubillan shoot a better % and make more too?)  And yes it would be a little obscure but there are often low-mid major guys at these events that aren't that well known either.

And yes Fulce won and it is just for Seniors as well.
