How much better would this game be if it was played during rivalry week?  When we play, its obviously big for Marquette wisconsin fans, but everybody else still is watching football and could really care less about this game.  Switching it to the middle of the conference season could really be beneficial to both programs.

How would that be beneficial?

The Big East only allows in season non-con games if they are Nationally Televised.

Yes, I realize that both Pitt and Rutgers played non-con games recently...but I believe those were because of extenuating scheduling circumstances.

"Rivalry Week" is a contrived ESPN promotion.  No one but hardcore basketball fans would know what you are talking about.  Furthermore, neither team wants to take a break out of their conference schedule to play this game.  It's fine where it is.

Marquette vs. Wisconsin is our key rivalry game every year.  These games are the ones that are most appealing to fans that our both parts of these communities, as well as outsiders, since even they can get more into the games due to the stakes.  People don't tune into UNC- Virginia Tech, but UNC duke gets a ton of viwers.  I think its just a shame our marquee game every year takes place at a time when college basketball isn't front and center.

I know it's contrived, I just think it would be great pub for the team and the school if it took place in January or February instead of early December.  And in response to an earlier post, this would definitly be a nationally televised game.

(cough) MU vs. Florida Gulf Coast. (cough)

If exceptions are happening every year .. it's not a rule.

Again, that was an exception due to extenuating circumstances. As I remember, they were scheduled last minute because another team backed out of a game.

It could be that the big east won't let you play D1 non con games unless they are natioanlly televised.  I believe all those schools are D2.

I don't think the Big east would care about Marquette scheduling a game against a big ten opponet who is in state, in a rivalry game, especially in a week like this where Marquette has six days off.  People would rather watch this game than ole miss/miss. state, which was on last night.

Where do you get off assuming the Big East wouldnt care about something?

I am assuming that the Big east would not care when this game is scheduled, as long as it doesn't directly compete with another big east game.  Which means you schedule this game when their is no other big east games slated.  I don't think that sounds so crazy.

Indeed, you are correct that the FGC game was unique circumstances.  That's why I added .. if exceptions are happening all the time, then it's not a rule.

Marshall and WVU play every year during Beast play...

There is indeed a rule. I am trying to run it down to see what it actually is.

Just checked the Big East website, saw nothing concerning it.

MU - UW is a huge deal to those of us that live in Wisconsin.  I don't think its a big deal nationally.

I could be wrong.

Golden Avalanche

Definitely some douchey-ness in this thread from the usual parties.

Off week always sucks.

Litehouse

I like the game right where it is, before Christmas.  I'm sure there are a lot of WI families like mine where there are connections to both MU and UW, and the winning side gets to exert their bragging rights during family gatherings at Christmas.  I have a standing bet with my brother, UW grad, on the game every year, and the loser has to pay up at Christmas.

LON

This game wouldn't mean anything to me if I wasn't from WI and had good friends that went to UW.

But the same could be said about Miss. and Miss. State.

I agree it would be great for the FANS to move this game. And I'm sure that the Big East wouldn't mind us doing it. 9 times out of 10, this game is nationally televised (if you include ESPNU or ESPN360, which I'm sure the Big East does).

But I don't think it would necessarily help the MU players. Adding another tough matchup in the middle of the Big East gauntlet just isn't necessary. Having the game early in the season ensures the team gets at least one solid non-conference game on their resume before the Big East minefield starts. And moving it would also just make what is already a usually pretty weak non-conference season look even weaker.
