DJO Outta Control?

I understand running the shot clock down, but when we get late in the shot clock it seems like DJO just puts his head down and hopes for the best. I hope he learns to not only look for his on O but for others as well

I agree he does seem to get a bit out of control when he drives to the bucket.  He has a nice pump fake to get the defenders up, and that is when he can blow by and finish well.  But when he is just simply taking the ball off the dribble to the hoop it seems that times he hopes for the best -as evidenced by his drive late last game that was called for charge.

He will learn.  Great upside for the kid, and he seems plenty smart to improve that aspect of his game.

Young guy who has success and starts to press as he plays instead of letting the game come to him.  He'll learn.

Sounds like this thread is a deja vu of McNeal's early years. He came around well didn't he? And DJO has the advantage of already having a jump shot, something McNeal needed to improve.

The other killer is that .. with 6 seconds, he'll think time is running out, and "put his head down .." etc.  6 seconds is plenty of time to find someone else, rather than chuck something contested up.

DJO is by far my favorite player to watch. Hayward and Butler, of course, are also a lot of fun to watch but I expected them to be big this year. Was not anticipating DJO being so explosive. Agree he can be a bit wild but good LORD that guy can drive. Excited to see how he develops.

DWade had a lot of offensive fouls early in his first year.  Guus have to learn.

He can drive and he can drop the three. The latter is going to be the most important factor with Vander coming in.

The particular situation you probably remember is when DJO got the ball late in the shot clock and drove the lane picking up a charge (his 4th foul) that we could see coming a mile away.  I think the failure there was not DJO's.  The offense had really bogged down for the prior few possession.  Lots of standing around, few cutters, no paint touches.  Remember DJO is not the point guard.  In my mind if our decision is that DJO is going to be our man late in the clock then someone, probably the point guard, needs to get him the ball coming off a screen where he can either shoot the 3 (I'm fine with DJO taking a 3 at any time, I'll roll the dice on that) or take his man off the dribble while the man is still moving in from the screen.  I'm not in favor of DJO just holding the ball at the top of the key until the last few seconds and then trying to drive the lane with 4 guys collapsing in there.
I'm sure some of this is due to fatigue late in the second half.  Guys don't have the energy to move as much.  I understand that but then DJO as one of our best scoring options needs to be "set up" not have to do it all himself.

I think the point is that MU did not have good offensive sets in the second half.   They were tentative and did not take some open shots early and then someone had to put something up late in the shot clock.   When the game is on the line, the team needs good offensive sets and it seemed that the critical last 3-4 possessions of the game we turned tentative instead of aggressive.   Defense had something to do with it but that as well as freethrows are the key to turning all the team's hard work into wins.

Early years? McNeal was a blackhole in his late years too. DJO has the same issue's though.

He certainly wasn't the turnover machine in his senior year that he was in his freshman year.

Seriously.  Buycks went 5-14 with a 1-4 from 3.  While he did score some points he wasted a lot of possessions, especially with Lazar and Butler shooting around 50%.

yes DJO is out of control a lot.  no different than alot of very talented first year players that are asked to do way more than they are probably ready for.  Dwade was a turnover machiner bad shot taking machine his first year.  jerel was like that for 3 maybe even 4 years.  yes he makes alot of mistakes but i could not even imagine where this team would be without him.  he seems like a very smart thoughtful kid and as the year goes on and especially into next year i think he is going to be a great player.  as i have said before DJO is going to be an MU great.
