McCormick Hall incident
« on: November 15, 2009, 09:04:04 PM »
A neighbor with a frosh tells me one of the residents of McCormick checked out last night.  As a parent, I cannot imagine a worse scenario.

The e-mails we got from the university said there was no foul play suspected, and the week-long event as described below leads me to believe it was a sad situation where the young man took his own life.

"To Write Love on Her Arms was Friday November 13. Even though that day has already past, let's do it for another week, in memory of Andrew Siebenaler. Write love on your arms for the next week and feel free to invite as many Marquette students to the group as you can. As always, keep Andrew's family and friends in your prayers.

It is understandable that some people may not want to write love their arms, if that is the case it would still be great if people would join just to show their support.

Don't know what TWLOHA is??:

MISSION:
To Write Love on Her Arms is a non-profit movement dedicated to presenting hope and finding help for people struggling with depression, addiction, self-injury and suicide. TWLOHA exists to encourage, inform, inspire and also to invest directly into treatment and recovery."

Horrible news. It's heart-breaking to hear about this for a man with so much life still ahead of him. As a new parent, my heart cannot fathom the pain his family is feeling. The prayers of myself and my family go out to him and the rest of the Siebenalers as well as the students at McCormick. Hope he's resting in God's arms now.

Here's to the rest of Marquette's student body with the hope they continue to support each other well past this tragedy.
May his soul rest in peace...

Good luck and God Bless to hall.    May God's love find them and comfort them in this horrible time.

Just terrible news. Apparently he hung himself. Can't even imagine what the roommate is going through having to see that.

Prayers go out to his friends and family.

The number of suicide attempts each year would surprise you.  I personally knew of two (both survived) in my 4 years, including my roommate.  Many others are .. unpublicized.

I was actually just thinking of asking that. Not asking for any specifics, just if there was a stat of this out there

I work at a university about 2/3 the size of MU, and we have a couple of attempts per year.  Rarely do they end in death though.  It oftentimes isn't something planned like a hanging...mostly a "spontaneous" attempt to overdose after already impaired in some way.  Also, the head of our Student Counseling Services says that the students are often very ashamed afterwards - they were crying for help more than they were serious about killing themselves.

Kids can oftentimes *seem* ready to go away to school, but many times they aren't.  And this is the far end of that spectrum.

Here is the Marquette Tribune article about his death and candlelight vigil held in his honor:

I have no stats for you, but I will agree with what Hilltopper said.  Most of the incidents don't come remotely close to the same medical point that this one did.
