MU 85, Centenary 62

Led by Jimmy Butler's career-high 27 points and 13 rebounds, the Marquette Golden Eagles opened the 2009-'10 season with an 85-62 victory over Centenary on Friday night at the Bradley Center.

Maurice Acker added 11 points and Darius Johnson-Odom 10 -- with both coming off the bench -- as MU shot 50.8% and out-rebounded Centenary, 43-26.

Butler hit 11 of 16 shots overall, all five of his free throws, and grabbed five of his boards on the offensive end in his first career start. The Golden Eagles needed all of his contributions early on, as senior Lazar Hayward got into early foul trouble and never really got on track.

Sir Larry, I give you credit, you're a visionary:
    9. MU top scorer and how many: Butler 25

Luckily, I had my vision checked this week
    9. MU top scorer and how many: Butler 26

Recap: Centenary

Player of the game: Who else but Jimmy Butler?

The junior forward made the most of his first collegiate start, scoring a game- and career-high 27 points to go along with 13 rebounds in 32 minutes. The 6-foot-6 Butler hit 11 of 16 shots overall, 5 of 5 free throws, and grabbed five offensive boards.

He also got MU off to a great start with 10 points in the opening 7:27, and did a little bit of everything over the course of the evening.
