Wish John Wooden a Happy 99th Birthday

Written by: noreply@blogger.com (muwarrior92)

Yes, John Wooden did not coach at Marquette, but he was an Al McGuire favorite.  Today he turns 99 years old.  There is a national campaign to send birthday wishes Coach Wooden.  We're more than happy to help in that effort.  Marquette fans, send some birthday wishes to an American icon and arguable the greatest college basketball coach ever!

Coach Norman Dale

Not only a great coach, but also a wonderful human being.  I will spare the details on how this came to be, but on August 18, 1992* my wife and I had the opportunity to have dinner with Coach Wooden.  This was not at a banquet or fundraiser or other such event.  Nope.  It was Coach Wooden, my wife and me at an otherwise empty restaurant in Indianapolis for 2+ hours.  One of the most memorable events in my life.

* I did not remember the date when I started this entry, but it was also the day Larry Bird retired from the Celtics.  Which makes it handy that with a quick Google search I will always be able to find the date for this story.

He is a world class human being.  His new book came out yesterday and I find his teachings on life to be incredible.

99 things about John Wooden...article in today's LA Times.  He was very close to becoming the head coach at Minnesota.
