ESPN's 'ranker' is at it again, can anyone tell me why USC is even an option/automatically top 25?

Southern Cal is ranked 25th by Sagarin in his all time rankings.  Therefore, ESPN wants to know how the fans would rank these 25 teams.

Apparently USC had a good program in the 50's, 60's and 70's.

I know, just saying....but doesn't ESPN usually give more voting options than available positions...you would think they would put like the top 30+ according to Sagarin and rank 25 or so.   Also, glad they used our old eagle logo/pre- Southern Miss copy

Up until the mid-1970's only one team from each conference could make the NCAA Tournament, so even in years USC was good, they had to sit at home because of UCLA.  For example, USC was #2 in the country in 1971 with only two losses, but both to UCLA, so they didn't even make the touranment that year.

I, for one, am not delusional enough to think that Marquette is the #1 program of all-time. Therefore, I will not vote for MU as the number one program.

There's winning and there's losing.  You voted for us to lose.  Grats.

No, I never voted for us to lose. I was just realistic enough to realize that we are in no way the #1 team of all-time. Hell, even in our best decade we were still only 2nd best. Marquette has built a solid program, one worthy of a Top 25 ranking, but #1? Not a chance.

Outside of Villanova, we have more 1st place votes than anyone ranked 10th or less.

Like I said.  If you didn't vote for us to win then you voted for us to lose.

Polls on the internet aren't for realistic results.  They are for fans to stuff their ballot-box to show that their fan-base is superior to all other fan-bases.  Polls (on the internet) are for ego, not for realistic responses.

Right now, MU has the 10th most #1 votes.

Huh.

Why on earth should anyone lie and make MU number 1?  I'll bet some voted IU 25th as well for the same reasons. MU is not the number 1 program so why should people be asked to lie with their vote?

blatantly honest

I voted Marquette #1.  Followed by Cincy, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Minnesota.  But really I was just grabbing teams at quasi-random.

b/c thats what all the fans of all the other teams do...this isnt some REAL poll that matters where u have some moral obligation, its just fun....which is why I placed KU last.

The poll asks: "...which school possesses the greatest overall basketball program..."?
In my heart, MU is the greatest.  If I looked at win/loss records and NCAA appearances and successes...  Well, that's a different set of criteria entirely.

If they asked me to vote what I thought was the most successful basketball program, I'd lean to UK, UCLA, and UNC like everyone else.

Sorry dude, I answered it honestly as I'm sure most respondents did....that's why the votes were mostly consolidated toward the top 5 teams.

But yes, it's all in fun.

I am actually amazed that ESPN considers us one of the top 25 teams in the country.

pretty sure they are ranking programs (all-time numbers) not "teams" as in this season.
