Rice is a damn fool if he thinks that Derrek Jeter couldn't compete with the players of his day.

"We didn't have the baggy uniforms. We didn't have the dreadlocks," Rice said. "It was a clean game, and now they're setting a bad example for the young guys."

He followed, "damn whipper snappers won't get off my lawn riding skateboards, listening to their hip hop music."  Rice then proceeded to lower his broom, but quickly rasied it again at one of our producers who was hearing headphones, and thought he was listening to that "rock and roll jazz".

I guess I don't see where it says Jeter can't compete?  He seemed to be making a more social comment about how the players are self absorbed, play for things other than the love of the game, it's more about them than the team, etc.  I tend to agree with Rice.  I don't think he's saying they couldn't compete, just that those guys don't compare to what he feels was the way the game should be played in his day.  Just my guess.

Have you guys ever seen the story about Rice who jumped into the stands when a kid was hit by a foul ball in the head....some say he saved the kids life.

Jeter is a poor example by Rice. For his entire career, Jeter has been a pro's pro. Remember when he dove in the stands? He didn't save anybody's life, but he caught the ball.

I'm not a Yankee fan at all, but Jeter has always played his butt off and has been very clutch in the playoffs. Have to admire that.

There are some soft players in the bigs, but Jeter isn't one of them, which hurt Rice's comments. Makes him sound like a grumpy old man.

I think TT is talking about this quote:

"You see a Manny Ramirez, you see an A-Rod [Alex Rodriguez], you see [Derek] Jeter ... Guys that I played against and with, these guys you're talking about cannot compare,"

Not sure why that comment is necessary, especially about Jeter.  Even though I hate the Yanks you have to admire what Jeter has done, I mean he has an outside chance to broke the all-time hit record (Rose had 2,762 through the season he turned 35, Jeter has 2,696 with 41 games to go) and it sure seems like he's been a pretty good role model.

I agree, that's the quote he was talking about but it doesn't mean to me that they can't compete, at least that's my interpretation.  I would also agree that Jeter was not a very good person to bring into the conversation.  Manny and A-Rod, on the other hand, is a different story.

That's the quote I was talking about. The way I read it he is saying they couldn't compete in his day because A-Rod and Jeter don't have baggy uniforms or dreads.  That's only Manny.

I hate the Yanks but Jeter is one of the few guys you can't say hasn't been a professional throughout his career.

Jim Rice is a dick.  He's always been a dick.  That's why it took him so long to be elected...which he deserved BTW.

Jeter suffers from overhype because he's a Yankee.  But he is the epitome of a baseball player.  Solid in every phase of the game.  A Hall of Famer no matter the era.

I'll disagree.  Most people in baseball believe him to be an honorable man, he just didn't deal with the media.  And when you don't deal with the media, that's what prevents you from getting into the HOF.  They control it.

I'll agree with that.  That's one thing I don't like about having the sports writers vote.  You could have amazing numbers but if they don't like you you aren't going in.

I think thats why Ron Santo hasn't gone in yet.  He pissed off a media member or two in his day.
