Tom Crean's Tanning Bed

The General has taken on a new command.

Got back into MKE about a half hr ago. A few thoughts before bed-

1) MU fans took Legends over, and tried to drink all the Miller Lite they had ;) Gotta love hearing Ring Out Ahoya sung loud and clear!

2) Yep, the JACC is still a dump.

3) Great MU turnout, probably 500 or so, but was very vocal. Nothing sounds better than hearing "WE ARE MARQUETTE" echo in an opposing arena. Great MU contingent in Section 106.

4) The perimeter defense was outstanding. They switched and showed well on screens, McAlarney had someone in his shorts the entire game. Which brings me to my next point...

5) As great as Jerel was tonight... Mo Acker is my MVP. Phenomenal defense on McAlarney, and ran the team well, allowing James to play the two. Huge because James really used his quickness to exploit the seams in the zone better than he could up top.

6) My throat really, really hurts. I'm gonna sound like death tomorrow. Well worth it.

Section 106?  Sounds quite appropriate.

I was very impressed with our turnout last night.  We were loud and were on our feet far more than the rest of the Irish faithful.  Everytime the crowd started to get into it the Irish fans would stand and then take a seat after 20 seconds while all the people with gold shirts remained standing.  Nothing like hearing MU De-Fense and We Are Mar-quette in another opponents home court.  I also heard several Irish fans mention that they've never seen so many opposing team's fans at a Notre Dame game. (Not since Michigan for football I believe was one guy's comment)
MU travelled well and after the game it was great to be in the parking lot with a ton of happy MUers.
Great game.
(And yes the Joyce is still a dump)

Great MU representation.  I loved hearing the crowd cheer and then the "WE ARE MARQUETTE" chant after DJ's final layup.  You could really hear it on TV (and I thought it was funny that the ND fans then had to try to drown you all out to save face).  Great job.

After watching the Warriors (18-2, 7-0 Big East) pull away by choking the Irish (12-7, 3-5) down to just one field goal in the last 31/2 minutes, visiting fans began a "We are (clap, clap) Marquette" chant. Notre Dame students answered with the "We are (clap, clap) ND" standard.

Actually, they are (clap, clap) in trouble.

"You look at the rankings and the standings in the Big East and you get worried," Irish guard Kyle McAlarney said. "We don't have anything right now. We don't have an NCAA bid. When you see the standings and see our record, you definitely feel a sense of worry."

I have probably been to a dozen MU/ND games over the years at ND.  The best representation yet..no doubt.  I have been to many mnay mnay road games for MU over the years and without question the biggest crybaby fans, and simply disrespectful fans are from ND.  As we are walking out under the big Mu sections some huge fat lady is in front of me and my group and she looks up and the Mu contignent and knew we were behind her and says to her husband( intenitonally loud enough for us to hear)  "boY those MArquette fans sure have bad sportsmanship and are classless"   OK.   Then we walked by he ND womens bball and they satrted heckling us and saying deragatory things.  At that I point had had had about a dozen ND people come up to me unsolicited and say a classless unprovocted comment about MU and it's fans.  So I had had enough was not angrry simply used to it and how can you be angry after a win like that. It's actually comical their childish behavior.  So as the ND girls are yelling at us I turned to them and said "looks like you got your asses kicked too up in Milwaukee...We own ND"  They shut up I dont think they they expected that i would know we beat them too.   Also on the way in I was with a group, had had one beer and was not being loud or anything...we had kids with us and some ND friends simply walking and conversing and upon entering an ND rent a cop sees my MU gear and confronts me and tells me they dont allow intoxicated people into the game.  I was very diplomatic...I wanted to go to the game and politely asked him what he was talking about and he went on about this and that...luckily my ND folks we we re all with stepped over and with all their ND gear on looked at him and said get real here guy and he backed off.   Also had an old lady sitting by me and after the game I had abrief delightful converstaion with her she asked me about Mu, said had a niece that went there she was probably 70, just then her husband forcably grabbed her by the arm...yanked her and gave her a deathlook and told her to stop talking to me.  WOW!  abunch of people saw that it was scary.  So in summary typical game at ND.  Winning their is also becoming typical.

Amazing game last night.  I LOVED the fact that the "We are Marquette" was very noticable on TV in the last few minutes.  I even laughed out loud a the ND fans started up their chant to drown in out.

I have two brothers that went to ND and two sisters that went to St. Mary's (and were in the ND marching band and pep band).  I've been forced feed ND for the last 30 years of my life.

It was great to talk smack last year and have MU back it up.  This year, I didn't want to pile on my lesser siblings, so I skipped it.  But I can't wait to send them all an email this morning.

By the way, out of the five of us, I'm the only one without a class ring..........

Edit: And yes, after attending countless ND football and basketball games, I can say ND fans when at the sporting events are pretty much jerks.  Especially the ND fans that never even WENT to the school.

Growing up Catholic, my father force-fed me on ND growing up. "Every Catholic boy should want to go there. Maybe someday if you study hard., you'll go there," he would tell me. Well, I got to MU and went to several MU-ND games, both in MKE and South Bend. My father refused to believe me when I told him ND kids were just like any other college kids -- they smoked dope, they drank a lot, they did stupid things. The difference was that ND students and alum think their poop doesn't stink.

mucrew08

I was the game with some friends and I must say we had a completely different experience with the fans. Most of the fans around us were pretty nice and wished us luck after the game. Now of course there were some jerks including a 40 some year old lady that kept turning around and yelling at me to shut which, which just cause me to yell even louder. It was a great game to be at. We had a large group that was chanting We Are Marquette all the way out of the arena.

I've never heard ND fans referred to as Domers or Golden Domers until recently.

"Domer" is slang for someone that give great head.

I've been laughing my ass off all week at all of those proud domers from ND  :D

I HATE ND.  My oldest was accepted there and was trying to decide between MU and ND.  The admissions counselor said " I know they'll probably send a limo to bring you to MU and throw everything at you but here at ND everyone deserves merit scholarships"  I wanted to vomit.  Not good to dis the alma mater of the kid's parents.  Way to tell a kid he's nothing special.
Nothing better than beating Notre Dame.  And our student section rocks compared to theirs.  It's as if they don't know how to cheer unless they are doing their lame standards.  ( How many times can you pump your arms??)

mucrew08

I completely agree with warriormom on their student section. We talked about that the whole game, they only have a few cheers and constantly do those. They had no cheers while they were on offense and only yelled on defense, there were no chants about defense or anything. I really liked that the student section had to chat "stand up" to the rest of the building when there were big plays. While I think sometimes the rest of the BC needs to get more into the games, I'm glad that when its needed they do and our students don't have to ask them to.

I also found it funny that our section sat during the majority of the game, but come halftime they all stood during the entire halftime? It was pretty backward to me.

So the most important question: did he make the right choice?

I will say that there is nothing better than waking up to a text message this morning from a friend of mine who is an ND grad congratulating me on the win.  Then she asked "Why does ND always suck in big games?"  Of course I wanted to respond..."Its not just in the big games..."

Or, you could respond, "I guess when you're ND, St. John's is considered a big game."

I am a ND fan except for the days that MU plays them.  My brother went to ND and its really hard to sit in the same room to watch the game.  From my experience, I get the "poo doesn't stink" vibe from a few but they are pretty nice for the most part.  They tend to be pretty religious and they usually have nice things to say about Marquette.

You guys went to a college basketball game on the road.  There are going to be drunk and stupid fans.  The game was amazing but must have been very frustrating for ND fans.  In the first half, it seemed that ND was playing catchup the entire way.  In the second half, ND seemed to have gotten control of the game only to have it slip through their fingers at the end.  They started the season being final four contenders and now there are feelings that they will not get a bid.  IF we were in the same position, I think some of us would be bitter... and a rotten apple spoils a bunch.

Extremely difficult to read. My head hurts now.

I wish i would have been there. I only hope that the Georgetown game in DC will allow me to relive what you all experienced last night.

From the game I can't complain about the fans there.  I share someone else's thoughts in that the damn pumping arms thing was overdone, but it did look fairly sweet.  Despite that I got real sick of that and the fight song by the end of the game.  As for the fans: I was sitting on a corner leading out of the arena and once the fans started leaving early I had one older ND fan who shook my hand and told me "You have a really good team."  I was surprised as most of the other fans looked rather bitter and ready to get out of there.  Other than that nothing major, though the fans in front of me seemed to have dirty looks on their face every time we cheered (which was quite often).   I only had one negative encounter on the way out as we tried to weave through the exiting student section.  He was the only one that even said anything and it was negative to say the least.  Other than that it all seemed to be pretty civilly distant (which I don't have a problem with).

That was my point I was trying to make to my dad, Erick. He had this impression of ND kids studying till 2 a.m., getting up at 7 to attend Mass, going to class all day, then spending their nights and weekends studying and praying. I tried to tell him that wasn't the case. I remember how pissed off I was two years ago when I drove 10 hours to MKE only to see Jerry Smith beat us with a 3-pointer. I had to bite my tongue when some Loserville fans were celebrating. I'm sure a lot of ND fans were ticked off last night.

Jackson_Downer

The ND fans at the bar in Chicago last night pretty much kept to themselves although we exchanged a couple of dirty looks.  Only comment they made was that MU showed no class in the celebration on their floor after the game.  I said, "Eh, sour grapes."
"Nice helmet!"
"Actually, it's not a helmet, it's a hairmet.  You see, it's got extra room in it so you don't mess up your hairdo."

aHHH  have you been to a bball game at ND?  first of all they dont serve been and most of the people in the stadium are over 70. They get visibly upset and down right beleigerent to opposing fans.  It's the our sh1t dont stink attitude and how dare you come in here wearing that stuff and rooting for soemone else we are better than you.  see Driving Miss DAisy

I was the guy in row 2 of 106 with the flag.  I make a lot of noise at games and tend to piss off some people.  All the ND folks around me were good natured and I had a good time with them.

There was one guy in the lower bowl right below me that was the biggest jerk I have ever seen at a basketball game.  He was about 50 and wearing a white sweatshirt.  From the tipoff, he was SCREAMING at the refs.  He was calling for holds on our Harangody defender when ND hadn't even gotten the ball across mid-court.  He punched the chair next to him after Gody's first charge and was screaming out of his skull.  I yelled for him to relax and settle down lest he had a cardiac incident.  He heard that, turned around and started screaming at me:  "What did you say?????"  His eyes were bulging out of his head and all the veins in his next and head were popping out.  I have never seen anything like that in my life.  All the ND fans were embarassed by him and were laughing along when I kept needling him the whole game.  Grade A a-hole.  Everyone else seemed fine.

I think the MU turnout was smaller than in 2007 and about equal to 2006.  The MU crowd was VERY vocal though.  There was a lot of We Are Marquette chants and general hooting and hollering in the concourse.  Very happy Warriors all around.  I don't think the locals took too kindly to the We Are Marquette chants in Legends afterwards.

I would have loved to start to chants.  One with 30 seconds left as everyone was bailing out of the place:  "There go the Irish!!"  And, after the game:  "NIT!  NIT!"  In the interest of taste and sportsmanship, I relented.

There's nothing like a win on the road.  Now I hope we can get win at DePaul and Louisville, my other two roadies for the year.
