Can people actually admit we're pretty good now?

Well lets see....if we go on after this to beat GT, we still won't have played a BE team (other than PC) with a winning record.

Then we only have to face DePaul and USF.  Gosh.  We could be 10-0 in the big east without playing any "good" teams.  Hah!  Whoops....sorry...I'm looking ahead  ;D

A lot of 9-9 and 10-8 predictions that need to be revised.

hmmmm  this win wasn't really special...let me explain.

Its like a bottle of ketchup that your wife is struggling to open and can't.

So she hands it to you which you open effortlessly.

Upon handing it back to her she comments how she loosened it up for you.

Its still not a good win, Notre Dame is overrated and was previously softened up for us in their last 3 games.

Thats basically how it will be spun I guess.

I don't like the argument that the teams we've faced in the Big East are a paltry 14-27 in Big East play.  But let's remember that 7 of those loses were to Marquette.
Sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand.

Thanks for the downer, Debbie! This was a huge win no matter how you slice it!

Dude, it's sarcasm!  The thread is titled "so how do we downplay this win?"  :D

Exactly... when people say the combined record is 14-27... we gave 7 of the losses... a more appropriate measure would be 14-20 in other Big East games...

But if we were to be 0-7 in Big East play, those teams would be 21-20... and it would be a tougher schedule...

Sports analysts always point to combined records even in NFL or college basketball... but when a big % of the losses are attributed to the team you are diminishing as having a soft schedule, maybe there is a reason the teams have so many losses... the lose to the good team with the soft schedule

The Gottliebs of the world will downplay it.   For any MU fan, there is no possible way to downplay a win in South Bend.   The only thing that approaches this for pure sweetness is a win in Madison.
Luke 6:45   ...A good man produces goodness from the good in his heart; an evil man produces evil out of his store of evil.   Each man speaks from his heart's abundance...

It is better to be fearless and cheerful than cheerless and fearful.

We couldn't even beat a bad Tennessee team and a mediocre Dayton team on nuetral courts. The hiring process was flawed!

Gottleib will say, "So Marquette beats another unranked team - big deal.  Still pretenders."

That's because he's too busy stealing your credit card to actually watch a game

Though the pre-game spin was that Notre Dame would give everything they had, they needed it so much more than Marquette did...

The way I look at it, if this team is a bottom-feeder in the conference:

Providence 6-1
Villanova 4-2
WVU 4-2
Cincinnati 4-3
Notre Dame 4-4

Not our problem either that this big game as well as two big games vs. Georgetown aren't "big" anymore because these teams dropped some games.  Pretty soon Syracuse will be in the same boat.  Actually, losing to GT, Louisville by dougle digits, and Pitt by double digits leaves Cuse's best win a home win against ND.  UConn also has possibly less legitimacy to its schedule since the two are very similar except they LOST to Georgetown at home already.  Funny how Cuse's win at home against ND and Uconn's win at ND is landmark but we've played a team that is currently dead in the water two days later...Will anyone be legitimate by the time they face us?
