News reports have Virginia Tech celebrating "one of the biggest wins in school history" last night vs. Wake Forest.

I can't remember the specifics but beating a superior Marquette team years ago (like 20+ years) has to be on that Hokies top ten list of b-ball victories.

Are you talking about VA Tech's 1995 NIT Championship win over MU?  Not sure it was much of an upset.

Not an upset, but still a "big win" - the NIT title.

I'm pretty sure they beat us in Milwaukee that season, so it wasn't an upset.  The train ride home from MSG after that game was miserable.  We had that game won and lost a half dozen times.

Deane took too long figuring out that team. That MU team was a fun team in the NIT with Miller, Hutch and Pieper wreaking havoc all over the place.

Beating the #1 team in the country is a bigger win than the NIT title.  No one really cares about the NIT.  Remembering that game back in 1995, I certainly wanted Marquette to win, but it didn't mean that much to me when they didn't.

I think the stinging loss that I was recalling was during the '82-83 season to Va Tech, but I could be wrong that MU was the superior club.

The team finished 19-10 that year with a 1pt. loss to Tennessee in the first round of the NCAA's.

The Rivers years were frustrating ones in general.  He was a H.S. stud and a solid pro, but I would characterize his MU experience as disappointing.  The clear highlight was the half-court shot at the buzzer to beat ND!
