OT: Pitino says players have too many distractions.

Rick Pitino would love to see his University of Louisville basketball players kick all their Sidekicks to the curb. Not their friends, mind you. Well, all right, maybe some of their friends. But I'm talking about the phones. I'm talking about burning the Blackberrys, throwing out the Treos, adding a self-destruct app to their iPhones. Heading into their Big East opener tonight at South Florida, Pitino says his players have too many voices in their ears, too many friends and family. After Sunday's win over the University of Kentucky, Edgar Sosa said he had 42 text messages and more than 20 voice mails. Pitino said he'd like them to begin focusing on a network of one. "There's too many people in their lives," Pitino said yesterday. "If they were just consumed with Father Rick or Uncle Rick, and not with all these idiots on the streets who know nothing about the game, it would be much easier on them."

If anyone could get a hold of the players numbers, I would suggest adding some more inspirational messages from everyone's favorite UofL loser, Derick Character...

The only distraction that Pitino's players have is that they rely way too much on jump shooting----not near enough finishes at the hoop.

Whenthey're hot jump shooting they can beat anyone----when cold they can lose to just about everyone.

Pitino's high post offense of last year cleared room under the hoop for finishes----this year the finish is clogged by an undersized center.

Why can't Pitino ban cell phones from the locker room?  It's his team, isn't it?

I think he wants the phones out of their lives, not just out of the locker room.  Unless his players are texting at halftime, because that could be a problem.

Don't other college kids, let alone athletes have phones, PDA's, email?  Heavens, even the Harvard kids do and they manage to show up for big games and win--and graduate.  Slick Rick has been slipping off the edge ever since the NCAA started cracking down on graduation rates.  Look in the mirror and see the kids you recruit, Rick.
