MU back in AP top 25

Jan. 5, 2009 1:46 p.m.

After a two-week hiatus, the Marquette Golden Eagles moved back into the Associated Press' top 25 -- and with a bullet.

In the midst of a five-game winning streak, and having knocked off Villanova and Cincinnati en route to a 2-0 start in the Big East, MU (13-2) re-entered the poll on Monday afternoon at No. 18. That ties the Golden Eagles with Villanova, which received the same number of points , 436.

The Golden Eagles opened the season at No. 16 and rose as high as 15th on Nov. 24 before falling completely out of the rankings on Dec. 22 after losing to Tennessee.

With MU returning and tied with Villanova and West Virginia checking in at 25th, the Big East once again has an incredible nine teams in the top 25, including No. 1 Pittsburgh. The others are No. 5 Connecticut, No. 9 Georgetown, No. 11 Syracuse, No. 13 Notre Dame and No. 23 Louisville.

MU has two games again this week: at Rutgers at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and at home against West Virginia at 11 a.m. Saturday.
