Nebraska scrimmage recap
By Todd Rosiak of the Journal Sentinel

Nov. 3, 2008 | While details of MU's scrimmage session at Nebraska can't be divulged due to NCAA rules, coach Buzz Williams offered some broad strokes on Sunday night, and left little doubt traveling to match up with the Cornhuskers was a great move for his program.

"It was excellent. Excellent," said Williams, on the way to the airport in Lincoln. "It was a long day for our guys, but that was part of the purpose behind playing on the road. We went for a long time this morning, and another session this afternoon, and I think it was extremely beneficial for all of our guys in a myriad of different ways."

Facing a Nebraska team whose strength is its guard play, like MU, the Golden Eagles apparently had their ups and downs -- not a huge surprise this early in the season.

"I think that how we rebound the ball, how we finish defensive possessions is critical to what our team is going to be when we're able to get stops and conclude the possession with a rebound," Williams said. "Obviously our strength is our speed and quickness, and we can play in transition. When the pace slows and we're not getting stops, now the game's shortened and that's not to our advantage.

"I think by being part of a scrimmage, against another opponent, it was the first time I was able to coach our team only, instead of coaching two teams in practice. That was was revealed even more. We have to get stops so that we can score in transition, we have to finish possessions with rebounds. We can't allow teams to shoot a high field-goal percentage because that's going to hurt our field-goal percentage, because we're going to score at a high percent in transition and we want to get as many baskets like that as we can."

Williams will give the Golden Eagles off today, then set to work on improving some of what he witnessed in the scrimmage beginning on Tuesday. MU then will host Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday afternoon.

"This has been a big weekend for our program," said Williams, adding everyone emerged healthy from the event. "A very good weekend as it relates to the development of our team, and it gives us things to build on this week in preparation of our first exhibition game. The value of it, I think, doesn't have a price on it. I think it's priceless just because we're able to do a lot of different scenarios within our team, and play a lot of different games within the game as it related to how we kind of set up different things in the scrimmage."
Ludum habemus.

Why?  Does the NCAA have to legislate everything?

Badgerhater920

Someone's gotta be able to get some stats/more specific details from the scrimmage right?

There are a few blurbs on the Nebraska board:

It says we may have won by 2 - that surely is going to hurt our NCAA seeding come March   ;D

I don't know if it was NCAA rules that made Buzz point out the obvious but he sounded like a normal fan.  "Our obvious strength is our speed and quickness, and we can play in transition." Get stops and conclude with a rebound.  Lets hope it was NCAA rules holding him back.

The game wasn't played like an actual game.  That article linked above also says:
QuoteThe other "source with knowledge of the event" said a final score was hard to determine because they used 5 minute increments, and the score reverted to zero each time.

Exactly.  Its basically a practice session against outsiders.  Can't read anything into "scores" as the coaches are trying out different looks, etc.

Be nice to know how the players did against outside competition.  I mean, did we score more points then them in each 5 minutes?  Did their front line whoop ours or did ours hold their own.  Hey we are fans, we want to know.  Who is going to die if we know?

Remember the NCAA rules.

Something from the Nebraska board link:

"It went well for both teams. Marquette won the games when they had their starters in but Nebraska is so deep that when the subs all went in they won. It was close."

Hmmm...

Instead of speculating, I think I'll just take it like that.
