Mbakwe attending Miami-Dade

Written by: Todd Rosiak

Former Golden Eagles forward Trevor Mbakwe is currently enrolled at Miami-Dade Community College, men's basketball coach Matt Eisele confirmed via email on Tuesday.

Eisele, however, would not comment further on Mbakwe or how he wound up at the school after transferring from MU.

Mbakwe, meanwhile, has not returned multiple phone calls seeking comment.

There has been scuttlebutt that Mbakwe will spend a season at Miami-Dade before transferring to the University of Miami, but there probably won't be any confirmation forthcoming until Mbakwe signs a letter of intent to play for the Hurricanes.

Mbakwe averaged 1.5 points and 2.1 rebounds in 11 games last season after missing the first 3 1/2 months due to knee surgery. He likely would have played a key role off the bench for the Golden Eagles this season.

My guess is he'll attend at least two more schools before his eligibility runs out. Best of luck.

apparently he also doesn't value education as well.  Florida schools education... some of the worst.

Marquette, Milwaukee, Minnesota, Minneapolis, Miami, they all sound alike.  Anyway, we wish success to Miami-Dade's new star.

Ummm, Miami is a great school....its not a state school, although it should be with tuition at 35K per year without room and board.

Wow did TC recruit some strange kids.

He's not strange for wanting to leave MU but he is strange for going to two HS in GA, two HS in MN and now 2  colleges.  Not to mention getting medically red-shirted and then liftig it and transfering from that school 5 months later.  People in Minny (AAU types) told me a long time that he was a good kid saddled with big time issues, guess they were right.  Makes you wonder of TC ever "vetted" these guys.

Super Mario, your thoughts?

It was one HS in Georgia, not two.  He did try to go back there after only spending a month the first time, but ended up going to his second high school in Minnesota instead.

The more this story develops the more I get the feeling that you're right.  I bet he attends at least 1 more school beyond Miami. (If that's were he's planning on landing after Miami-Dade)

Weird, weird story.  ?-(

Obviously, someone has his ear and is helping him (every year it seems).  Seems odd that he's made a lot of his moves right at the beginning of school with a lot of distance involved.  Wow, calls MU on a late on Friday , 8/22, and is situated at Miami-Dade a couple days later (as someone with connections reported rumors of that following Monday, 8/26).  Thats a lot of fast movement.

This whole thing just doesn't make sense to me.  As I felt during the Favre disaster, it just seems like we're missing a few pieces of the story here.

Are you referring to Miami University in Ohio?

I believe they're referring to the University of Miami in Miami, FL.

No, the University of Miami in Florida is indeed a great, private school.

Miami University in Ohio is the state school of the two.

Debates about which one produces hotter co-eds are welcome.  It's a closer race than you may think.

Miami (Fla.) may be a fine school, but its athletes have traditionally been a-holes.

Yes, its athletic programs (FB mostly) have not been paragons of high standards over the decades.

I just hate it when a multimillion-dollar basketball program rests on the whims of a teenager, or a 20-something, or whatever the heck he is. This is the case FOR paying college basketball players.

Holy mack...all along I thought UM FL was a public school!

Wow...that really puts the football tradition of that school in a different light for me. Thanks!

Nope private and VERY expensive to boot.  My sister is a Cane.  Their academic standing has steadily improved under Donna Shalala, but you are paying top dollar for 2nd and in some cases 3rd tier programs, which to my way of thinking, is just crazy.  But hey...they can charge what people are willing to pay, but just a few hundred dollars under Ivy League schools?  Whew...damn.

Though I would say UM is good...not "great"...great if you want to get into the NFL and great if you intend to stay in Miami, but not so great if you want a degree with a bit of a national rep...that is commensurate to that tuition bill. :o
