Title: New ESPN top 100 for 2009
Post by: bma725 on June 11, 2008, 10:04:45 AM
The whole list is here in case you want to check it out http://tinyurl.com/4q3ruq (http://tinyurl.com/4q3ruq)

Updated as of today, just giving it a quick read through, here's the MU targets:

11 Christian Watford SF 6'8" 215 AL  92 None
25 Nolan Dennis SG 6'5" 185 TX  90 None
28 Aaric Murray C 6'10" 230 PA  89 None
34 Jeronne Maymon SF 6'6" 215 WI  88 Marquette
44 Roger Franklin SF 6'5" 215 TX  86 None
47 Omari Lawrence SG 6'3" 185 NY  85 None
48 Michael Dixon PG 6'1" 165 MO  85 None
51 Jamil Wilson SF 6'7" 215 WI  84 None
52 Mfon Udofia PG 6'2" 180 GA  84 None

93 Kevin Parrom SF 6'5" 185 NY  78 None

For those who don't know, ESPN's ranking is done by Bob Gibbons, one of the most respected recruiting gurus in the business.  His rankings are always a bit different than anyone else.  Guys that appear on everyone else's list, like Johnnie Lacy are nowhere to be found.  Guys that Scout, Rivals and Hoopscoop think are 4 star players may be a low D1 prospect according to Gibbons.  Lots of volatility, but he tends to be right more than the others, and he's not afraid to take a stand.  He was one of I think 2 services to rank Dwyane Wade in the top 100 out of HS.

WOW! He's got Maymon ahead of Wilson...that amazes me since we all just assumed that Wilson would be the prize recruit that we NEEDED to go after. Looks like we already have the prize recruit.

Maymon at #34 seems a bit high to me, but who am I to argue with an expert!

When was the last time MU had a recruited rated higher than 34 by Gibbons?

He had Travis Diener at #33, Dameon Mason at #37 and Dominic James at #31.

Maymon did win Mr. Basketball of Wisconsin over Wilson (and all the seniors and other solid juniors in Wisconsin).  From almost every person who is knowledgeable about basketball and  has seen both players play I have heard that Maymon is better than Wilson.  This doesn't surprise me, Maymon was a huge get.  Now I hope we get the 6'10 center and a point guard off of this list.

I was thinking the same thing.  That's amazing!  We sure have a handful of targets in the top 100.  Does he have any other lists from previous years?  I'm always curious to see who was ranked where.

This probably isn't the simplest way of finding it, but on these lists Gibbons' rankings are either AS (for his All Star Report) or HM (for Hoopmasters, his joint venture with Van Coleman).

They're very different players.  Maymon is a late bloomer who is pretty physical on the inside.  Wilson has generated talk for years and is more of a perimeter / slasher type.  Maymon also plays on a HS with much more talent around him.  I would say it is pretty hard to say definitively who's "better."

Couple of clarifications:

Maymon did NOT win the Mr. Basketball award. That award always goes to a senior and this year it was won by Demarcus Phillips of Milwaukee Washington. Maymon did, however, win the state's Player of the Year award from the Associated Press.

I also would not classify Maymon as a "late bloomer." He has played varsity basketball at a high level since his freshmen year at Madison Memorial, one of the state's elite programs.

In the post season class of 2001, it was nice to see Travis' name ahead of guys like Ben Gordon, Channing Frye and Emeka Okafor!

Just looking at the list of players and clicking on them in the list on the web-site a lot of them do not have Marquette as a school that the players are considering.  Did you put together a list from Scouts, Rivals, this list, etc. and put all the ones you found together?  Would Marquette not being listed with these players mean that it's a long shot for us to get the players?  Just curious.

They are players that have listed MU on Scout, Rivals, HoopScoop etc because ESPN is notoriously slow for updating the schools section of the player profile.

For example, a few weeks ago, Richard Howell said that his top two were MU and Oregon.  But if you click on his name, neither MU or Oregon are listed.  They list 5 other schools, but not his top 2.  In an article on Scout 2 weeks ago, Junior Cadougan's coach said that MU, Louisville, Baylor and Lousiana Tech were his top 4, but if you look at his profile not one of those schools is listed.  Kevin Parrom just went on a visit to Xavier, and he's going to visit MU in a few weeks, and ESPN doesn't have a single school listed with him.  The list goes on and on.  Probably most players have an incorrect school listed with them right now.

Good synopsis.  I feel Rivals is a little better than scout as far as keeping current with schools.

Mark, where did Wishoops rank him during his freshman and sophomore years?

Always behind Jamil Wilson, but always very near the top of his class.

As a freshman, Jeronne averaged 13.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest. As a sophomore, he averaged 16.8 ppg and 7.4 rpg. He has been remarkably productive throughout his prep career.

FWIW, since I posted this earlier they've already updated the top 100.

Maymon is now up to #33, and Williams up to #69.

For the targets:

Roger Franklin went up from #44 to #43.

Omari Lawrence and Michael Dixon went from #48 and #49 to #47 and #48.

Jamil Wilson and Mfon Udofia went from #51 and #52 to #50 and #51.

Tyler Haws went from #64 to #63.

Erik Bledsoe went from #77 to #76.

Junior Cadougan dropped from #78 to #79.

Darius Morris dropped from #83 to #84.

Michael Snaer dropped from #88 to #89.

Kevin Parrom dropped from #93 to #96.

Anthony Marshall went up from #94 to #92.

I don't think any of their grades changed, perhaps just shuffling of the guys with the same overall grade.

Some may say the same thing about your posts, especially during the WVU game.   :D
