MU To Participate In 2008 Chicago Invitational Challenge

Chicago - Marquette will be one of eight schools competing in the third annual Chicago Invitational Challenge, scheduled to take place November 28-29 at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill. The Thanksgiving weekend tournament will also include Dayton, Auburn, Northern Iowa, Chicago State, Mercer, Texas Southern and Bethune Cookman.
All-session tickets for the two-day, eight-game tournament will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 7. Tournament pass prices are $109 for floor seats, $98 for club level, $87 for lower bowl and $65 for upper bowl.
Marquette season ticket holders can purchase lower bowl seats in designated Marquette sections by logging into their My Marquette Account and clicking "Purchase Marquette Tickets."
Non-season ticket holders can purchase tickets over the phone at 1-888-SEARS-TIX (732-7784) or online at www.searscentre.com.
Each team participating will play on both days of the tournament. Marquette will face Northern Iowa at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 28 and will play either Dayton or Auburn on Saturday, Nov. 29.
The University of Northern Iowa Panthers (18-14) will be lead by junior center Jordan Eglseder (8.9 ppg) and junior forward Adam Koch (8.7 ppg).
The Dayton Flyers (23-11) return a talented young squad including All Atlantic-10 rookie selection sophmore forward Chris Wright (10.4 ppg) and junior guard Marcus Johnson (10.1 ppg).
The Auburn Tigers (14-16) return one of the nation's most experienced teams including senior forward Korvotney Barber (13.8 pp), senior guard Rasheem Barrett (13.6 ppg), junior guard DeWayne Reed (8.9 ppg) and team MVP senior guard Quantez Robertson (7.8 ppg).

Umm, Xavier won the 2007 Chicago Invitational. Illinois won the inaugural invitational in '06.

According to the Sears Centre website, tickets go on sale this Saturday, June 7, at 10 a.m. MU is scheduled to play at 7:30 Friday (Northern Iowa) and 7:30 Saturday (Dayton).

I think they are making the assumption that each of the host teams will win the first two games, which take place at home I think. Thus, only four teams actually make it to the semis.

It's the same set up as the other Chicago Invitational's, nothings changed.
MU will most likely get Chicago St. and (I'm guessing with this one) Mercer at home. MU wins both, they advance to Hoffman Estates.
MU then plays Northern Iowa (assuming they advance), and then the title game would be Dayton/Auburn (or third place game).
To answer your question, I'm guessing MU is the 2008 champ.

A little more on the Chicago Invitational

Turns out MU will face Northern Iowa at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 28 and the winner of the Auburn/Dayton game on Nov. 29 in the Chicago Invitational, which is played at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill.
Also participating will be Bethune-Cookman, Chicago State, Mercer and Texas Southern.
All teams will play two games in the tournament. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. Tournament pass prices are $109 for floor seats, $98 for club level, $87 for lower bowl and $65 for upper bowl.
And in other developments, the Big East Conference announced today that Mike Tranghese will be stepping down on June 30, 2009 after 19 years as the league's commissioner. You can find a news release (http://www.bigeast.org/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=19400&ATCLID=1477969) on the Big East's website.
Tranghese was a big advocate of MU joining the Big East when it expanded back in 2005, and had a great relationship with the late Al McGuire.

The first two years of this tourney had rounds 1 and 2 played at the higher 4 seeds' home court. ( This year: MU, N.Iowa, Auburn and Dayton.) The 4 higher seeded teams won the first and second round games ( no surprise) and played each other in rounds 3 and 4 at The Sears Center in the championship bracket.
The four teams that travelled in rounds 1 and 2 also travelled to The Sears Center to play in a consolation bracket. Therefore, both days at The Sears Center offered an afternoon session ( consolation teams ) and a night session ( championship teams). All teams play 4 games.
Unless the format has changed, the announcement from MU assumes that the higher seeds will win their round 1 and 2 games. Based on the other teams involved, the home teams should win their first two games.
