The Rev. Robertson pioneered something that had been done locally but never before on a national basis:

Make religion into a global corporate entity. Before, most Protestant religions were the equivalent of storefront grocery stores. The Rev. Robertson was the guy who invented the religious version of Kroger for the Protestant set (Catholicism was the Walmart of Christianity!).

Sure Billy Graham came before the Rev. Robertson. The Rev. Graham's vice was hubris. He was more interested in being "pastor to the presidents" than he was in profiting off religion. He needed money but, in the Rev. Graham's defense, money was what it was supposed to be in a religion: a means to spread the word.

Nope, it's the Rev. Robertson that taught how profitable God could be. He, in turn, beget Jerry Falwell, Jim and Tammy Fae Bakker, Jimmy Swaggert and Joel Osteen. All had their own way of making millions. I think their message was, "If Rome can do it, why can't I?" What distinguishes them from Rome is the Catholic Church is the largest NGO provider of social services in the world.

As a Roman Catholic, ex-Southerner who grew up in the buckle of the bible belt, I always found the Rev. Robertson and Jerry Falwell entertaining. Sadly, there were way too many people who put their faith in the hands of these comedic swindlers.

Robertson and Falwell in particular were the modern day versions of the Bishops, Priests and Monks who sold indulgences back in the middle ages.

In 2021, CRS reached 193 million people in 116 countries. That includes providing over USD 75 million in cash and vouchers for displaced people in Gaza; restoring 503,096 acres of land in Central America; and helping 221,396 children and adolescents with HIV get treatment. CRS’ total operating revenue was USD 1,191,928 in 2021. 93.5% is spent on program services with 6.5 spent on support services like fundraising and general administration.

Yep: It states:
Which ones are the biggest? This article describes 15 influential NGOs located in places like the United States, Europe, and South Asia.

Which, of course, has nothing to do with size.Save the children is not the world's largest ngo. Articles I have read state BRAC is.

First of all, I'm not a go**amn researcher. I read the fact at one point, probably in the Chicago Tribune, Wall Street Journal or NBC Nightly News, and retained it. Unlike some in here, I've got better things to do with my day than research every single time someone challenges a fact. Go look it up yourself if you think I'm wrong. But I challenge you to find an NGO that's reaching more than 193 million people in 116 countries.

Good luck!

Secondly, I don't know if the list is ranked. Nor do I terribly care. What I see is a huge group of people of are devoting their lives to serving others. A group of people if you came out of an anti-Catholic, woke haze, you'd realize that they're doing exactly what classic liberal theory wants us to do -- take care of the folks in our world most in need. This is a huge wealth transfer from those of us who "have it" to those of us who "need it." Guess what: You don't need a government to do that! Americans -- and Catholics for that matter -- are among the most generous people on Earth!

I get that people hate the Roman Catholic Church (which begs the question of why they are in this room and why they went to Marquette). Pedophilia clouds peoples vision. And, for the record, I saw it up close in the 1970s at my high school. But you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. I get that others don't like Catholics because, well, our stand on life (including opposition to the Death Penalty). But for the sake of millions around the world who need CRS, don't denigrate the work they do.

Well said. These days people are too lazy to get the whole story and just read the headlines. There a pedophiles everywhere, so the Catholic Church is not even close to being unique. Some people in the Church handled it horribly wrong. They should and have been put in prison. I think that is the major cause of anger towards the Church. That is understandable.

Protecting podophiles has never been the mission of the Church (it was of some Church leaders), it was/is a major black eye but is hardly the whole  story of the Church and it is a good institution to be celebrated and recognized as such.

Protecting and preserving slavery was never the mission of the United States (it was of the Democratic Party), it was a major black eye but hardly tells the whole story of the US and it is a good county to be celebrated and recognized as such.

Cmon… These weren’t exactly isolated incidents. These were systematic cover ups. Look I think the Church has done a lot to reconcile and does a lot of good in the world. But that’s not minimize what happened here.

Yeah, it's totally unfair to focus just on child sex abuse when the church has had so many other horrific moments.
Like, the Inquisition. Turning a blind eye to the Holocaust. Indulgences. Burnings at the stake. Crusades II-IV. Abuse of indigenous populations in North America.

Catholic Relief Services is a group I donate to every year, they do tons of good work, and I know the head of Catholic Extension, they also do great work in the US, so they are on my list as well. It was partly how my own parish became involved in Katrina relief work, which I had personal involvement with.
And in fairness, while one can fault the hierarchy and some clergy for their actions during the Holocaust, many other priests and nuns  put their lives on the line to save lives or do other acts resisting the Nazis.
I will not miss Pat Robertson.

OK, some of you have raised questions about the foibles of religion. Your recollection is right on. But understand this:

Religion is man-made. It's based on a premise that interprets God's word in a way that allows human beings to lead better lives and attain Heaven in the after-life. Religion is nothing more than a consulting service for human beings around the world. With rare exception any more, no church has the power to compel us to do anything. That's as true for the late Rev. Robertson as it was for the late Pope John Paul II.

Because religion is a human institution, it has the weaknesses of humanity built into it. Greed, lust, gluttony, pride and a host of other vices are a part of any corporate, governmental, social or religious organization. You try to control it and people, like my parents generation, try to pretend it did not exist. But because our religious organizations are of man and for man and not of God, you always will have sin. Find me someone who professes to be perfect and, if nothing else, she's committing the sin of hubris.

Having faced down a predatory pedophile as he physically beat the crap out of us in class in the 1970s, I've got every reason in the world to be angry with the Roman Catholic Church. Our Bishop at the time was a fine man who stood up against segregation and march with Martin Luther King the day before he died, but he was incredibly weak on dealing with the Richards/McKeown pedophilia problems. As a consequence, he transferred them around the Diocese on grounds of "forgiveness." It was BS, but perhaps they were themselves ignorant. I'll let God decide that one. She's better equipped to deal with it than I am.

But what I learned is that when an organization does good, you don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. I did not see the kind of good in the Rev. Robertson's organization that I did in the Catholic Church. Pope Francis is everything Part Robertson wasn't -- humble, forgiving, loving and caring to everyone, even sinners and those who aren't part of the Catholic flock.

Yeah, but Pat Robertson was just a charlatan.  Much like a lot of the televangelists of his day and the current day.  There is a sucker born every minute, and these men predated on people searching for salvation.  I can think of few lower ways of getting rich.

Pat Robertson worked hard to get Ronald Reagan elected . This outcome materially changed the economic trajectory of our country for the better over the next 30ish years

Sure. But for the influence of Pat Robertson, Reagan may have won only 40 states instead of 44.

Yep, and without Pat’s influence in 1984 Reagan wins the same 49 he actually won.
