Electric start offensively but we're allowing them to go hard right too easily.  Gotta thwart easy dribble penetration.

Things looking good.  Our D definitely seems more disruptive to X than theirs does to us.  Would be great if we could get a good game out of Joplin today.  When O-Max goes off the floor seems we take an instant drop off.  Looking forward to seeing some Sean Jones.

Well it was fun for a while

Typical MU scoring drought. One point in almost four minutes. Too many threes, three of which were air balls.  On pace for 35 three attempts if they keep it up.

They have overcome these droughts, but tough X team.

Freemantle with two fouls and don’t take advantage. He may not play final 13 minutes.

Yeah I don't know how anyone can watch Oso this game and criticize.  He's our only meaningful big and he's been everywhere.  Sure it would be nice if he had secured a couple of those, but this game is going at an insane pace and Oso is always dealing with someone bigger.

There's a conversation to be had about Kolek being the best College PG in the country.

He may not score consistently, though he can, but he just runs an offense like no one else.  If he's getting his towards the rim he is just the best there is.

I think that was what the refs were telling him after the TO, if you put your big with 2 fouls in again when you are up 6, with 1:30 left, we will call a foul out of principle for you being so stupid...

Or, to explain, don't touch your players when they are dribbling up the court.

We should probably be up 10-14 when you add up the missed D-rebs and loose balls.  Kolek will need s breather at some point in the 2H.
Title: Re: MU/XU Game Thread
Post by: brewcity77 on January 15, 2023, 11:54:11 AM
Need to come out like we're down 4 instead of up 4. Good half, Xavier decided to make Tyler a scorer and Tyler said "okay, if that's what you really want." Need to keep attacking because this team can still score in buckets and they have the shot-makers even if they're 2/9 from three so far.

To be up four is pretty good, without Oso for nine minutes, but Shaka basically gave X four points in last 1:30 by putting him in.  Two layups, strange, strange move, even Rafferty said it.  Why, who knows.....

MU slowed down with threes, 5 for 12, with FOUR airball shots.  FOUR.

Two offensive rebounds to 11 by X, Nunge destroying them.  Plus overall rebounding.

To be up with Oso sitting, four airballs, lack of rebounding, is quite outstanding. Miller going to make adjustments with Kolek driving to rim with left hand, and of course Freemantle will return.

Keep it up, and of course, those darn refs again.

100% correct.  We should attack, and attack, and attack, and attack.  Then we can open up the barrage from distance.  Defensively I'd like to see a little more attention to detail.  Thwart the easy dribble drive and maybe take a charge once in awhile.  Box-out as well because we're getting abused on the glass.

To be up with Oso sitting, four airballs, lack of rebounding, is quite outstanding. Miller going to make adjustments with Kolek driving to rim with left hand, and of course Freemantle will return.

Keep it up, and of course, those darn refs again.

Hopefully they ask Shaka post-game what the rationale was for that decision.  I'm totally perplexed by what the thought process was there.

We suck at rebounding. We lose those battles just about every time.

Sometimes we simply do not grab the ball.  Drives me nuts.

X will switch from touch football to tackle.  Kolek will get fouled 5 times by 3 players on each drive in the 2H.  Miller counts on the home whistle.

MU needs 2nd half adjustments as well.  X will shut down Kolek and continue to shut down OSO.  OMax needs to be better in the half court and need more live ball turnovers.

You just can't help yourself, can you? Gotta say "we suck" about something. At least you're not back to "factually" stating that we sucked for 10 years. You sound like a 12 year old boy living in an old man's body.

Strong first half, interesting to see how their defensive strategy will change with Freemantle back in, expecting them to pack the paint so need shooters to hit shots. Defensively need to be better on perimeter, breakdowns have happened when they’ve been able to drive to the paint. Gonna have to rebound more as a team as well, OMax Kam and Tyler need to help out rather than  trying to leak out. Keep the pressure on and keep driving and I’ll feel good about this one.

I know the early 3s are okay in Shaka's system, but X has the horses to out-Shaka Shaka right now.  Things are just moving a little too fast for OMax to find any kind of consistent role/groove right now.  I'd like to see Shaka try to slow this down a touch and run some PnR with Omax and Kam to give Oso and Kolek a breath and try to get those guys more involved.

Agreed. The only other possible complaint would be pushes when we drive along the baseline, but those very often don't get called, so can't really pick a nit there.

We just are getting out worked on the boards and on loose balls. Also, not being as aggressive attacking the rim under control this half.

Your boys played their A+ game, with Chuckie Hepburn hitting 27 foot stepbacks and us missing wide open 3s.  Congrats though..on that win.  Enjoy the NIT this season.  And next.  We return our whole team.  I think we'll be okay.

Nunge might be the only big in the country who gets the benefit of the doubt with the principle of verticality when he gets away with contact when challenging guys in the paint.

Which would fine I think if you had two Osos.  But the other Oso (OMax) plays like a guard, so you end up with Oso playing the 5, banging against a guy who has 3 inches and 30 lbs on him all game.  When the first half has as many possessions as a Grinnell game, there's only so much he can do.  You'd need to be able to throw waves at them, but we had the look of a traditional team (trying to win the game from the 1 and the 5 without meaningful sub minutes at those positions) playing the Shaka system.

Still encouraged.  All things considered they looked great.

I was banned because I didn't relent on the fact that Derrick Wilson had zero business playing 30+ minutes for Buzz and Wojo, and the Wojo/Derrick defenders continually barked back.  The criticism was almost exclusively directed toward the coaches..not Derrick personally.

Barbs get exchanged..both ways.  You and the 5-10 others who were Wojo/Derrick defenders consistently took shots at me.  I returned some fire.  But, since your positions were largely in alignment with Rocky, I got banned.  Multiple times.

It takes two to tango and end of the day I was right about Buzz being off his game his last year(which explains why he played Derrick 30+ and benched Deonte Burton for the last 7 minutes during the Big East tournament while Deonte was tearing up Xavier), and that something was going on with him (disdain for Larry Williams)  Was right about Derrick, and right about Wojo.

It was unfortunate that you and other prolific posters here were clueless about how impossible it was to win playing Derrick Wilson 33 minutes a game.  And again, not his fault - that's on Buzz and Wojo.

I felt the same way about Buzz and thought he was completely checked out at the end of the year. I remember thinking the same thing during the Xavier game when he took Burton out “for his poor defense.” Thought it was ridiculous then and always wanted to see a replay of that game to see if there is any merit behind it, though I never found one. Sure seemed that way on first watch but I miss a lot things in the heat of the moment.

It was relay odd when he pulled Burton. I was frustrated with Buzz that whole year. And I loved the guy. But, given Buzz doesn’t have an agent, and he signed the VaTech contract 3 days after the season ended - one which negotiated  - there’s no doubt in my mind he was in discussions at least for a good part of that last season and essentially mentally checked out.

I am not a fan of Sultan, but if I am hoping to read an intelligent MU basketball post I am searching out Fluff over Rocky every day of the week. There are guys on here that really do not know ball and anyone that does can spot them in a minute.

Why ban NoLonger? He gets to post every 2-3 weeks and it is harder for him to post. Sadly, I would not call him the worst poster on scoop. NoLonger is a clown, but at least he does not play a role on scoop other than being clown.

Whaaaaaaaatt? The guys that self-proclaim hwo tough they are? The guys who deem themselves meat-eaters, and Knowers of Ball? Insecure? The gang who drolled over the most insecure person in the history of the internets, who insisted on fellating himself at every opportunity right before tattling to HR?

Those guys insecure? No way.

I hang around because I love MU basketball and talking ball with fellow MU fans. I can only speak for myself, but I can differentiate my feelings about scoopers on a personal basis and on a MU basketball basis.

Ironically, when I was overly negative in years past and I battled with several, or more, posters and I never took it personally. Shooter, AtlWarrior and others ripped me hard and it never bothered me. Sitting here today, I enjoy seeing their posts.

I still struggle on why fellow alums would flat out dislike posters. I have guys that are not my favorites, but I would have a cocktail pregame and talk MU ball with anyone on here. Anyone that spends time on here has a least one thing in common with me, MU basketball.

Truthfully, what the fxxk do I care if every poster wants to hate on the meat eaters. Imo, I think some on here are missing the boat on why we are on scoop. Nothing would make me happier than giving a high five to any scoop nemesis after a big one.

I am secure enough to know what my weaknesses. An example, I should not be a mod on board focusing on Pakistani Cricket and that is why I have chosen not to do so. I am fine admitting there are things I am capable of doing and things I should avoid doing.

Tough loss today.  There were some positives and some negatives.  X is a very good ball Club and Quette still had a chance late.

Get them when they come to Milwaukee.  Onto Providence.  Turn those frowns upside down

Brother Goose

I rarely take things personally here.  The voices in my head disagree, why should I expect the voices on scoop to be in  perfect harmony?   With a few exceptions, I believe that every poster wants MU to succeed.   I had my doubts a few years ago.
For me, scoop is entertainment.   I enjoy the mocking of dumb takes.   Sure, there are excesses and dead horses.   Welcome to society.
I, too, would enjoy a diet Pepsi and a laugh with most scoopers.

I thought it was a great game to watch and wish we had won. I thought they had 30% chance going into the game and thought they needed to have a decent lead most of the way to get the win. Got the fast start, battled hard and came up short. At this moment I would think they have 75% chance in the rematch.

I love jabbing, mocking and talking shxt all day long. It probably is one of my best skills in real life, not the internet.

My post was more targeting flat out dislike or disrespect to other posters. “Knowing ball” is an obvious jab at me and I think it is funny. That said, I think there posters that cross the line. Again, I really do not give a fxxk if TSmith thinks I am an pretty boy or bias thinks I should quit drinking.

Based off of who I think is on UB, you might be the only one young enough to fit the description. I do know, Newsie is right on you knowing ball.

Speaking of that, great game today and time to regroup. Tough place to win and they had a real chance late. Omax makes that shot 90% of the time. That miss was a ball Buster.

I agree, it is pretty funny that a group has suddenly anointed themselves as the Know Ball gang. Because if someone disagrees with, then they can quickly be dismissed as Don't Know Ball.

Buy hey, at least unlike your fellow Know Baller, you haven't suggested trading the league MVP right before he leads the team to the Championship.
