Is there still a block feature?  A feature to mute words or accounts?  If so, well, business as usual.  I’m sure some nutjob accounts will get reinstated and some current nutjob accounts will remain but you control your feed, like you do on most social media platforms.  Your choice how you use them or if you use them 🤷🏼‍♂️

"Twitter obviously cannot become a free-for-all hellscape, where anything can be said with no consequences!”

This thread should go well.

My guess is that you will see more advertising. He has to monetize it better somehow.

The ads are pretty bad right now.

I’ve read he wants to add some video chat features like WeChat has.  I’m sure there will be some things people hate and like.  That’s the nature of things.

Also, 3.5 pages O/U before this gets locked

I bet he tries to drive the ad business somehow. Spins and sells data to companies like Palantir in ways that nobody really notices but that is probably generally kinda bad unless you like police states. Adds a big loud feature or two that are generally harmless but that the weird internet nerds that love Elon will say is transformative and everyone else will say is asinine and ignore, and otherwise stay hands off. He's leveraged to buy a thing that he paid way too much to buy. He doesn't want Goldman and company making him hurt, so he's not gonna drive this thing into the ground.

Besides, this will be his shiny new toy for about 6 months and then he'll get distracted and do something else. He doesn't want to run a social media company, come on.

An emboldened cast of anonymous trolls spewed racist slurs and Nazi memes onto Twitter in the hours after billionaire industrialist Elon Musk took over the social network, raising fears that his pledge of unrestricted free speech could fuel a new wave of online hate.

The flood of racist posts was among the most prominent signs of how Twitter had changed in the first hours of Musk’s ownership.

On Elon Musk’s first full day as the owner of Twitter, the social media company immediately began to feel his imprint.

Twitter’s top executives were fired and its board of directors dissolved. The company said its stock would stop trading on the New York Stock Exchange on Nov. 8. Mr. Musk announced that he planned to form a council to handle Twitter’s content questions and would not immediately reinstate users who had been barred. And he tapped confidants for help and established a “war room” at Twitter to review its products and policies.

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/28/business/twitter-elon-musk.html?campaign_id=9&emc=edit_nn_20221029&instance_id=76028&nl=the-morning&regi_id=108420427&segment_id=111448&te=1&user_id=d36dcf821462fdd16ec3636710a855fa

So there will be content rules. Musk is forming a "council" and a "war room" to decide what will and won't be allowed.

Content moderation on Twitter will largely remain the same. Also, keep in mind that Twitter wasn’t exactly a perfect community with regards to moderation before the takeover.

Where I think the biggest difference will be is in content distribution and visibility. I don’t think Twitter was suppressing free speech from anyone, but they do control who is heard and who isn’t to a large extent. Technically, there’s nothing wrong with that since it’s their platform. People have the right to free speech, not the right to be heard. Even the right to free speech is debatable on social media.

Anyway, I think it’s safe to say that Twitter had a pretty strong left-wing bias when it came to distribution or reach of content. I think that will even out more but you may not even notice it much as ideally people will be shown content that more closely aligns with their interests.

I also think Musk will incentivize putting your actual name or identity to your words. Authentication will be a key thing for him.

Why do think that? I know he made it a key issue pre-sale during due diligence, but that’s because it wasn’t his problem then and he could use it to get out of the sale/lower the price/generally grab headlines. Now that it’s his problem I’m suspicious that he actually will do anything about it or cares.

That would be huge. We'll see.

It would be generally "good" for the purposes of keeping Tom from Accounting from tweeting qanon stuff under the handle 1488folifeyo, and may have a marginal impact on stripping out racist nonsense in the United States, but it would *also* completely destroy Twitter as a mechanism for marginalized people, people who are trying to expose corruption/whistleblow/etc, or people who live in places where their governments will absolutely, for example, imprison you for the rest of your life for criticizing the regime even if you're an American just visiting family for a minute (https://www.axios.com/2022/10/19/saudi-arabia-american-citizen-imprisoned-tweets), to communicate with the world. Bear in mind also that the majority of twitter's users don't live in the United States.

So, "verify the identity of every user" of Twitter is probably net-net not as good as it seems on the surface.

Also, for as much crap as Twitter gets for spam/bots/etc. (and as much as Elon tried to scapegoat bots to get out of buying the thing), Twitter needs its daily active user #s to at least not decrease. If they make everyone drop two proofs of ID to keep their account, boy howdy are those numbers gonna go down. And as I've said before, the financiers who let Elon leverage his TSLA stock to close this deal are gonna have... questions... if he starts taking actions that are going to immediately and materially reduce its ability to actually derive revenue from ad sales.

I haven't given it significant thought, but sitting here right now I think I disagree with idea that it would be net not good.

And I don't really care about Twitter's finances. I've never been a shareholder, and it will be a private company anyway. If it fails to survive, that's just what happens sometimes to a business in a capitalist society.
