Title: New SAFE-T Act passed in Illinois
Post by: muwarrior69 on September 10, 2022, 09:45:14 AM
At least here in New Jersey Judges and Prosecutors still have discretion when to impose bail. If what the article reports is true it looks like the wild west in Illinois. I would be curious to know what any scoopers who live in Illinois think.

I'm for both safe and T's.

We need to be able to lock up our valuables. And sometimes I don't feel like wearing a polo shirt.

Raise taxes.   Build more prisons, hire more guards.

Raise taxes. Tear down prisons. Fire cops, hire more social workers.

Coup attempts, election board criminality, theft of national security docs.

This is fun.

That would certainly help some of the issues in this country.

Putting pressure on judges to make detention/no-detention decisions is a good thing.

Putting the detention/no-detention 'decision' on someone's bank account is weird. It means that I'll never have to sit in jail awaiting a court date, but poor people will always have to.

It's nice to try something to fix the inequity problem that exists in the bail system.

Edit: It's obvious to OP that the Opinion piece you posted is wingnut stuff with no basis in reality, right? It's hard to tell if boomers are falling for propaganda, or if they're just trying to rile people up.

I’m down with 2 of those 4.

I don’t want to raise taxes; I just want us to collect taxes from those who owe them. Let’s close rich-people loopholes. Let’s enforce existing laws - something self-proclaimed “law and order”folks should be championing.

And obviously, I don’t want to fire cops. I want MORE qualified, well-trained police officers. We need them now more than ever.

It definitely would help those officers do their jobs better if we had more good social workers. I’m actually surprised you’re suggesting you’d be against that, Tony.

You guys are such rubes.

Hope the criminals takeover. You get what you vote for, good and hard. I don’t feel bad, will just figure out ways to keep getting ahead and widening the gap. Time to start recognizing this as an opportunity.

1. Pretty sure tower was being sarcastic.
2. The U.S. has the highest incarceration rate in the world. We imprison citizens at a rate nearly five times greater than the UK and Spain; six to seven times greater than Canada, Italy, Belgium and France; and eight to 12 times greater than Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands and Scandinavia.
Maybe, just maybe, it's time to think about whether mass incarceration works. Sure seems not to.

We even have for-profit prisons. They suck, too.

It was partially tongue in cheek.    All of your data points are accurate, Pakuni.   But the only way to lock even more up is to build more prisons and hire more guards.   Both of which cost a lot of taxpayer money.   So, if the desired outcome is more people incarcerated, then raise some taxes.

You say you don’t want to raise taxes… then, the next sentence you say you DO want to raise taxes. Shameful.
