Title: Your first car.
Post by: muwarrior69 on August 12, 2022, 04:24:34 AM
I saw this article about a classic Chrysler and was wondering what was your first car? When my mom got a new car I was given her 1959 Nash Rambler wagon; not fancy, but my friends always asked me to drive when we went to the beach. It was the only vehicle that all our beach gear would fit in.

First car - 1974 Plymouth Scamp that my brother and I were given when I got my license and my grandmother bought a new car.  (She got a world famous Dodge Omni.). Scamp was great as the windows in front and back rolled all the way down and there was no bar between so the side was wide open.
Underbelly rusted out.

Swore off anything VW forever after that car.  Never surprised to see VW at bottom of satisfaction rankings

Maroon 1969 Mustang coupe.  Got it in high school for $700 when it was about 8-9 years old.  After that one in the summer after high school (1979) I got a red '68 Pontiac Bonneville convertible with a white rag top for my MU years.

VW and Audi are well known as unreliable.  People love them, but they shouldn't.  Same with Jeep.

Audi has gotten A LOT better.  10-12 years ago I'd agree, but people I know with recent Audis have have loved them and not had any real issues.

VW, I think it depends on the model.  We've had a VW Crossport for 18 months with no issues.  Same with other people I know with the SUVs.  Jettas and other sedans could be a different issue.

1972 Pontiac Ventura.  Inline 6 with positraction.  Driver side completely rusted from previous owner parking on street and salting streets.
Reliable, simple.  Sold my Yamaha 400 CC motorcycle at end of summer and bought the Ventura with cash from the sale.

In 1981 I took over driving my Mom's 1974 Malibu Classic. Had a couple more hand me down cars and first car I ever bought was KO's old Ford Explorer. He put on about 10k miles and I had that SUV for about 5-6 years. I think I bought it in 1990 or 1991.

1982 Oldsmobile Fiernza. A white hatchback. 50,000 miles. Purchased in 1992 for $2000.

My cousin owned a used car dealership, and my mom promised him we'd buy my first car from him. It had nothing but problems for the year and a half that I had it (had to hold my breath every time I went to start it). We sold it for $500 to a family friend who was going to fix and flip it and he discovered my prick cousin had rolled the mileage back. It was replaced by a 1991 Dodge Shadow that got both my sister and me through HS and college.

Audi and VW share about 60-70% of the same components depending on the model. I have driven 5 VWs over the last 14 years or so (3 Passats, 1 Atlas and 1 Tiguan) and have never had a single issue with any of them.

That list also highlights how hilariously empirical people's experiences can be.

My BIL and his brother have done very well in the restaurant industry and they like a bit of flash.  Both of them drive Range Rover products and have for the last 5-6 years.  2 standard Ranges, a Range Sport, and a Range Rover Velar.  My sister in law has an Escalade.  The other brother's wife has a Porsche Cayenne, she previously had a Lexus SUV.

They got rid of the Lexus cause it was a maintenance nightmare.  Had tons of issues.  Then, in the last 9 months, the Porsche has been in the shop 3 times.  My SIL's Escalade has been a money pit and they've sworn off Cadillac forever.

Meanwhile, both Range's, notorious maintenance FUBARs, have been dreams.  Only in the shop for routine maintenance and a sensor issue that ended up being a simple reset.  Really amusing.

It's funny to see Kia and Hyundai near the top of that list considering the issue the brand is having with thefts. Is that a dependability issue?

I bought a 2008 Volkswagen Eos hardtop convertible used in 2011 with 29,000. Have owned it for a decade, had my children drive it in high school and college, and never had a problem with it. The car now has 97,000 miles on it and runs well.

The car has an Audi A4 turbocharged engine. It has been in Florida since 2018 and admittedly has been babied.

My first car was a 1975 Chevy Nova with a 350 cubic inch (5.74 liter) V8 engine. I have a suspicion that car is being driven somewhere in the Chicago area even as we speak. Thing was ugly as sin but indestructible.

Cadillac was ranked a lot higher and Honda a lot lower than I would have expected on the JD Power list.

As Wags said, these kinds of rankings need to be taken with a grain of salt.

Consumer Reports surveys thousands upon thousands of owners each year to record their experiences. One interesting thing of the last couple of years is that Teslas, in general, have received poor grades for quality and reliability ... but in answering the question "Would you buy this vehicle again?" the vast majority of Tesla owners have said yes. Again, grain of salt.

That's because Tesla is a cult, not a car company.  None of them want to admit that their Teslas are cheaply made and have poor quality control.  The tech is cool, they're saving the environment, and Elon Musk is their savior.

My daughter and son-in-law have a Model X. It has had lots of issues, mostly fit-and-finish stuff that individually seems minor but collectively is quite annoying, but they did have one engine issue that took 3 tries for Tesla to fix. Thankfully, it was still under warranty.

My daughter doesn't like the car much and I think she'd trade it for something else if the car market wasn't so crazy now. My son-in-law, who definitely is into high-tech stuff, likes it despite its flaws and he'd probably say he'd get another Tesla.

I mean, look at Land Rover.  They've been a maintenance and reliability nightmare the majority of the last 20-25 years.  But they still have steady and often growing sales.  They are a status symbol, but also attractive, comfortable, and usually drive beautifully.  Other luxury cars have similar issues.  Reliability is great but its not the end all be all for everyone.

I think of all these trendy big city neighborhoods where almost all of the parking is on the street.   Where are electric cars going to charge?   I can have the necessary equipment installed in my garage and charge it every night.   What about the tightly packed trendy north side of Chicago?

Took my drivers test in a big old conversion van with the electronic couch/bed in the back (we called it the hoopty), first car I drove regularly was a baller Ford Escort Pony 4-speed with the super high tech automatic seatbelts, around an ‘88. Ehh depends, the majority of upper end cars (aka Teslas and other pricier hybrids) are still parking in garages.  In my time in Old Town, Lincoln Park, and Gold Coast, it was fairly rare to see a $50K car parked on a side street, permanently.  The last apartment I lived in Old Town for 4-5 years had a 3 floor parking garage.  I'd say a good 3rd of the spots were rented by tenants who didn't actually live in the building.

I think more of places like London (and elsewhere in Europe) where parking just doesn't exist PERIOD.  Where you walk down the street at night and see Bentleys and Porsches and $200K sports cars parked on the street in Kensington or Notting Hill cause there literally is no garage parking available nearby, not even for the $5MM house the owner lives in.

This reminds me of a discussion I had with Dean Robert Reid.  He was my engineering senior project mentor - and a helluva guy.  We got to talking about Jags because he always had a beautiful XJ12 parked behind the engineering building.  He told me he has 3.  One for him, one for the wife, and one for the workshop... and they rotate weekly!

Anyway I just bought my son his first car... 1997 Lexus LS400.  Looks great and seems in perfect shape, and got it basically for pocket change.

I’ve found that vehicle reliability depends on power train maturity.

I bought a new 2003 GM vehicle with a 5.3 liter engine.  This version of the long standing 5.3 was only a few years old, and it showed. First issue was an intake manifold gasket going bad.  Turns out the the fuel blend would break down the gasket.  They had a redesigned gasket by time mine needed replacing.  There were other issues, including carbon build up on the intake, TPS going bad, intermediate steering shaft, etc.  I can safely say I drove that vehicle through its life cycle, selling it at 330k miles.

Replaced it in 2017 with another GM 5.3 engine.  This 5.3 platform was around for about 10 years.  No issues, and still driving it 119k miles later.

Coworker bought the same vehicle in 2019. GM had a brand new 5.3 platform that year.  He had sh1t ton of issues and sold it last year.  Only good part of that story was that he sold it for more than he bought it with the crazy hot used car market. Go figure.

I’ve never bought extended warranties as I am fairly handy.  However, I would consider one based on a vehicle’s power train maturity.

This was the first new car my parents ever bought after having had numerous used cars over the first three decades of their marriage.

When I went home for 1982 spring break, my parents gave it to me as an early graduation present, and I drove it back to Milwaukee.

Ah, the Gran Torino.

My brother had one and, true story, drove it to my wedding from St. Paul in 1980. Took out a power pole near LaCrosse. Not a dent on the Torino but the power pole sawed in half and went over the car.

When Wisconsin Power sent my Dad a bill for the damaged power pole, my brother told my Dad, "Don't pay 'em, Dad. Not until they send me my power pole.*

Sort of depends. The first car I drove primarily was a red 1978 Jeep CJ-5 ragtop, but it belonged to my mom. The first I bought was a silver 1983 Chevy Citation.

My most vivid memory of the Citation was getting ticketed going 20 over because the speedometer was broken (it was, but I also drove too fast as a kid). It didn't last long and I got the Jeep as a hand me down when the Citation died.

1984 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme - my Mom bought a new car and I got to drive her old one.  It was a great first car.

Any fans of Marvel Mystery Oil out there?  Add it to gas, oil, or both?

Audi and VW share about 60-70% of the same components depending on the model. I have driven 5 VWs over the last 14 years or so (3 Passats, 1 Atlas and 1 Tiguan) and have never had a single issue with any of them.

If you turned in the leased car every few years hopefully no major repair issues come up.

Have a 2017 Alfa Romeo Guilia TI for two years now and have not had a single issue, and is the most fun (and Beautiful) car I have ever owned by a wide margin. Go figure
