From the twitter-verse.  Not seeing much noise about it:

Had a D2 offer from LeMoyne .

Family came up with the coin to send kid to IMG for a year . Now paying tuition at MU. Wow.

If I had to guess Caleb is just having a little fun that he is going to college at MU. He and my son played AAU ball together.  Great kid and a really good family. He is a really hard worker but is not a d1 college basketball player.

There's no Insta nor tweet from the MBB accounts, so he might've just photoshopped the Marquette graphics. He lists himself as "Marquette Point Guard" but he isn't on the team roster page either. Looked like PFW from his own social media, but there's nothing from the MU side to confirm that.

Neither is/was RJ Walson.  Al, Hank and Rick used to carry practice players who weren't walk-ons and who didn't suit up for games. It's a big time commitment being a walk-on and Crean, Buzz and Wojo went through a number of them. Yet, the team still needs a bevy of practice players for scrimmages.

And maybe he is. But I said he was a preferred walk-on, which I based on social media. But after looking a bit deeper, I may very well have been wrong, so I'm walking back that earlier comment. Not sure one way or the other right now.

Prefered walk on doesnt mean anything. It just means a walk on contacted by a coach instead of tried out.

That kinda sounds like it means something...

It would mean something if the team had any other type of walk on.

So if it is like last year when they had a walk-on form on the MBB website for individuals who wanted to try out, then it would mean something? Which kind of means, since that was an option last year, it does?

They didnt take one. They didn't even technically roster a "preferred walk on" they had.

But it's there as a thing. Like when they put Tommy Gardiner on scholarship, gave a walk-on spot to Michael Kennedy, and then held try-outs the next week. Kennedy was a preferred walk-on because he got the spot before the try-outs. Similarly, this year, how they gave a spot to Jonah Lucas back in April without having to try out. Or, if this kid is added, he would presumably be a preferred walk on because they haven't held try-outs yet.

I mean, we didn't do away with the "senior" terminology after we lost to UNC because we knew Morsell and Kuath were leaving and Wrightsil hadn't committed yet. Just because there weren't any seniors on the roster, the concept of a senior didn't cease to exist. Just like the difference between preferred walk-on (contacted by the coach) and walk-on (had to try out) still exists as a concept.

Usually, it means the player is a non-scholarship player who is guaranteed a spot on the team in year one.  Since Caleb is not currently listed on the roster, my guess is they told him come try out, you will likely make the roster. Either way I wish him well.

https://www.recruitref.com/blog/whats-the-difference-between-a-walk-on-and-a-preferred-walk-on

Primer on the difference between a preferred walk-on and regular walk-on. Note both cannot receive a scholarship their first year.

A "practice" player is not a walk-on.  He or she can receive an academic or needs based scholarship because they are students only. But, obviously they cannot benefit in the things that student athletes can (direct coaching, training, travel, food, suiting up, NIL, swag, etc.).

I haven't seen anything on Caleb being a preferred walk-on.  Brew said he at one time saw it but then walked that back. I just think all the classifications are just causing confusion for the kids.

Al Clifford was a practice player during the 1977 (and others) season. Pretty cool experience.

A couple minor nits:

A couple minor nits:

  • The linked article mentions, "Recruits and their families must often make decision between accepting scholarship offers from D2 and D3 schools or becoming a walk-on at a D1 school."  No scholarships in D3 (but the point their underlying point is correct).
  • Practice players absolutely do get swag. At least as some schools.

I think at places like Kentucky, Louisville and Kansas these practice players are termed "general population" and reside in the basketball dorms.

There are no specially designated “practice players” in Mens sports. Men can be designated as practice players in womens sports but in Mens sports everyone is on the roster. This limits the number of walkons, especially if they won’t ever play, since they count against EADA numbers, an issue as female populations continue to be a bigger proportion of the student body. They also have to go through the Eligibility Center (and pay $90), whereas the women’s practice squad no longer have to.

odd looking at the staff roster and not seeing Allison Kellaher's name as a member of the support staff.

I think she may have joined her Mom on the team right after she graduated from MU
