Chicago wasn’t a finalist. Soldier Field can no longer fit a FIFA sized field.

That would make sense then. Thanks!

What other option was there? Cincy? Nashville, if considered the Midwest? According to Nashville media, their bid wasn’t good enough. DC-Baltimore bring rejected is interesting. This tournament will be inky the third time in history a capital city of a host country won’t host (1970, 2002 Tokyo, though Seoul hosted games) with DC and Ottawa out.

???  1970 was played in Mexico City.

The 1974 Final was played in Munich
The 1994 Final was played in Pasadena.
The 1998 Final was played in St Denis
The 2002 Final was played in Yokohama
The 2014 Final was played in Rio. (The capital was moved in 1960 so the 1950 Final counts.)

So this will be the sixth, unless you want to count 1998 and 2002 being in the same metro area as the capital, in which case it will be the fourth.

Why not Detroit or Minneapolis?

Why not Detroit or Minneapolis?

They either didn’t bid or weren’t selected as finalists. Detroit hosted games in 1994.

I also wouldn't be surprised if they didn't want any more indoor stadiums.  Dallas and Atlanta are both indoor, and then LA/Vancouver/Houston are all sort of hybrid, as opposed to a classic open air soccer stadium.

Actually reports are Chicago would not pony up the tax dollars to fund the bid / bribe back in 2018. Chicago pulled out years ago but not due to facility issues.

I don't live in Chicago and don't care much for soccer but it is weird Chicago is not in on this. Maybe soccer is not that popular in Chicago?

OK thank you.  That played a bigger role than I thought.

Not true at all.  US Soccer is based in Chicago for one.  Tons of youth soccer participation.  A solid number of US internationals have come out of the Chicago area

Also, the non-American soccer contingent is incredibly strong.  Most international games at Soldier Field are very well attended.

Thanks. I'm fairly clueless on this so your post is helpful.

Safe to say the financial position of Chicago and Illinois played a significant role.

Not the final, any games.

There were no games in Bonn in 1974 (though there were Berlin games, the capital of a united Germany). None in Tokyo in 2002.

Ford Field (Detroit) would be a very tight fit for FIFA soccer dimensions and was eliminated as a potential site in 2018 and Minneapolis pulled out in 2018 as well, citing "unacceptable demands" (financially) from FIFA. Interestingly enough Vancouver did the same but was persuaded to get back in due to its attractiveness as a host city.

Nashville isn't anywhere close (geographically or culturally) to the Midwest. Take it from a native.

Rahm pulled out. Chicago had enough with worldwide sports organizations after the Olympics fiasco.
