Title: 2022 US Open Thread
Post by: Herman Cain on June 12, 2022, 05:12:34 PM
Rory McIlroy just won the the Canadian Open against a star studded leaderboard . Will be interesting to see if he can carry the momentum into The US Open this week at The Country Club in Brookline MA

Justin Thomas continues to be in good form and maybe he can make it two majors in a row

Looking at the course, a little heat, a little wind, and par will be a great score.   A lot of wind, and par will be a dream.

I hope that under Mike Whan the USGA simply sets-up the course to host a stellar tournament, but stops chasing the notion of par. I thought last year at Torrey was a step in the right direction. At Torrey, they produced a good event without the usual USGA clown show. It was compelling golf, coming down to the wire. Does anyone really care that Rahm shot 6 under? I venture to say, no.

Chasing par doomed Mike Davis' tenure and damaged a number of Opens.

It played the same for everybody.   Shootout between two leading players of the day.   Course needed to mature.

This is going to be narrow fairways, deep rough, small crusty sloping greens.   Old school.

Those sloping greens require extreme distance control to be on the right level. Would not surprise me if Morikowa showed up on the leader board Sunday

Smith is too wild off the tee for a very tight course. He's currently 151 in driving accuracy.

As Rico stated, his performance in majors the last 3 years is not good. He has 5 wins on Tour since 2020, but not one Top-10 in a major championship.

To be honest, I like Rahm to repeat. Currently, #1 in strokes gain off the tee and keeping it in the fairway looks to be at a premium this week.

Callaway's running a deal that if you buy a new Callaway driver and correctly pick a Callaway pro as winner of the Open, you'll get reimbursed what you paid for the driver.

So if you feel strongly about Rahm and you could use a new driver ... have at it!

That's fair but didn't he win the Tour Championship?  Who will have a hot putter this weekend?  Rose hasn't won forever it seems but looked good in Toronto.

Nah. I'm currently playing the Titleist TSi3. Fantastic driver. And, I have never really gotten along with Callaway clubs.

I believe Callaway ran this promotion last year too, prior to Rahm's win at the U.S. Open. Rahm has been a very good signing for them.

Until they roll the ball back and unless the USGA really tricks up the course, some scoring will be available.  It’ll get firmer over the weekend if there isn’t rain.

25 players under par on day 1. That is a lot . Surprised this course is so accessible .

USGA sets up the pin placements with numerous accessible locations on Day 1.  Then on Days 2, 3 and 4, those accessible ones, decline each day.

Also they will not cut the rough and by Sunday, that grass will probably be another inch or so longer.

Many of low scores came yesterday morning and now those players start today in the afternoon, when the winds pick up.  Looked at weather and they may get some thunderstorms this afternoon with more wind than yesterday afternoon. Also they go from 88 degrees today to low 60's on the weekend.

I hope it doesn't rain, because the greens will get a lot firmer, but if it does, the wet rough will be a nightmare.

I don’t think he’s out of it by any stretch of the imagination.  I pegged the winning score to be around -5, so 6 back isn’t crazy.  There is enough firepower ahead of him for someone to get on a heater and open it up, however.  Been since ‘08 they’ve had a playoff.  We’re due

I caught only a small part of the interview but Craig Stadler said something that might not be a bad idea.  He thinks the PGA tour could and should add a 5th major.  He suggested the Tour Championship.  The LPGA has 5 majors and I think the Champions tour does as well.  I'm just curious how this would impact guys bolting for the Saudi league, it may give them second thoughts.  Stadler also said that he loves the PGA Championship in May because when it was in August it was a "huge disadvantage to heavy players".  :)  He said he'd rather have a major in Michigan in December.  :)

The May PGA effectively eliminates the upper Midwest.   Hazeltine, Whistling Straits, Oakland Hills... courses just aren't going to be ready.

Haven’t they tried stuff similar in the past? Like the World Golf Championships? You can’t just simply label something a major and expect the public to follow along.

I think they’ve tried to make the FedEx Playoffs like that. Even making large dollar amounts for the champion. I think it still pales in comparison to what the LIV guys are making.

The only way I see them regretting their decision is if they get banned from all non-LIV events. Even then, I’m not sure they are going to regret it that much.

Yeah I mean the FedEx Playoffs is just golf's attempt to get people to watch a little bit more after the NFL kicks off.  You can try new things, but unless the public really cares and tunes in, that doesn't mean something magically becomes a major.

Like I told you two days ago, the USGA sets it up harder each day.  That pin on #3 is ridiculous.

The wind gusting to 25mph and they probably didn't water greens that much, so even would be a good score.

Yes, very nice round and valiant effort.  But, long way to go today.

The back nine tomorrow might be an epic battle.  If Rory doesn't miss putts, Morikowa picks up a few, Rahm, Scheffler, and now Fitzpatrick.  Very good players, all within OWGR top 15.

Rahm takes soul possession of the first with 1 hole left. With the way he was playing and his overal talent it was setting him up great going into sunday.

Thomas just came from 7 back at the PGA.   Zalatoris just blew a big lead in a major and Fitzpatrick has not been here before.  (though he has won on this course before)    The low round for the week is 66.      I would say anyone at +1 or better has a chance.   But realistically,  I would assume the eventual winner is currently under par.

I was very surprised none of the top 10 players had a sub 70 round.  And Scheffler's 5 hole stretch after he got to -6 was crazy.  His tee shot on the short par 3 derailed him for awhile.

Tower, you would have birdied 9/10 times on 11 with your wedge game and ability to execute the knock down shot.  Scheffy doubled and lost focus.
Title: Re: 2022 US Open Thread
Post by: tower912 on June 19, 2022, 08:34:16 AM
Nope.   Nobody birdies anything 9 times out of 10.   With the rough and the bunkers and the elevation, 11 is like #7 at Pebble combined with #17 at TPC Sawgrass.  Sheffler hit a rough patch and is only a couple back.

US Open is all about avoiding doubles.   The home of the good bogey.

I get the scores are lower than most USOPEN's but I really like this course.  Lots of blind tee shots, difficult short holes, and not particularly long in general.  I think if the rough was a bit higher and maybe they watered the fairways more this would play significantly harder.  On some of these holes they're getting 40-50 yards rolls on the fairway. I could see Brookline being in the USOPEN rotation with a few tweaks.

Scheffler is not going backwards and that will be hard to beat

Fitzpatrick looks very confident Herman.  He just hit a perfect tee shot on 5 and has an Eagle putt.

The rain overnight softened the greens just enough to make them receptive.   Still fast, but a good iron stops.   The rough doesn't hurt if you are in the fairway.

Good grief, the rough is US Open deep.  Wait for tee shots on 12 and 13.

If Scheffler hits it in the rough on each of his final 9 holes, just like he did on #10, he will not win. Rough in spots is brutal.

Will Z is a stud with approach shots, but he has to hit it within three feet to make a putt.  Like Scheffler did, once he wins, the gates may open, but putting, ugh….

But the rough is not difficult enough…….. cost Scheffler a shot on 10 and probably Will on 12.

Will Z turning into Ben Crenshaw, he is going to have a few 5 to 6 footers down the stretch and we’ll see how he does.

That was the heavy stuff and nowhere near the fairway.

That’s why they call it second cut of rough, which is brutal at US Opens, and yes it was about 15 feet from fairway.

Told you watch out for tee shots on 12 and 13 and Will just putting drives in the rough.

Fairways and greens…….  Let’s go for a three man playoff.  Fun.

He is awesome at lags, but 15 feet in and he is at bottom of PGA tour.
He has made three putts over that on back nine, but just missed a golden one on 14.

Once he gets over that, watch out.

I don’t think he will.  Putting almost ended his career and if they push for an armlock ban and a lot of top players want it banned, I don’t ever see him being a good short putter

Most likely. But theres a chance -4 still ends up a playoff.

Fitz and Z are not proven on this stage yet to think that a +1 on the last 4 for both is outrageous.

Rory needs to birdie both 17 and 18 to have a punchers chance now.

Good for Fitz, good for my wallet and good for golf.  That was fun.
It was incredible how Fitz came back from the blunder . A true champion.

Fitz has gotten much longer off the tee it seems to me.  I'd like to see Brookline added to the USOPEN rotation.

They had some stats on The Golf Channel that showed Fitz average club head speed went up from 112 to over 116 MPH with some swings in the 119 range . That definitely has helped his cause

They could make it a little tougher.  :)

I thought it was a well balanced course.

Woulda been a much tougher Sunday had there not been overnight rain. Winner probably would have been -2ish

Yeah, it really held up well.  My hunch is, the club isn’t keen on opening the doors to the USGA or any organization for that matter on a regular basis.  Oakland Hills is similar in that regard, though they’ve been added back to the rota.  Even then, they have a 16-year window between opens and the 4 amateur events they’re hosting don’t need infrastructure.

Pebble, Oakmont and Pinehurst look like real anchor sites.  All 3 have the land to accommodate the USGA city and hospitality that gets set up.  Pebble doesn’t close until a week before the open and I’m prettt sure Pinehurst is open for the most part, too.  Oakmont prides itself on being a major venue.  It’s a big commitment and members have to be willing to sacrifice a lot to host these events.

Shinnecock will get its share of US Opens as will Winged Foot but those places are only willing to go once a decade or so to accommodate members.  I hope the USGA keeps trying new spots like Chambers and Erin Hills and LACC next year.  The move towards a regular rota seems to be gaining steam but I think that cuts at their purpose of growing the game.

*2028 is open and it sounds like it might be Winged Foot since they couldn’t have crowds in 2020

MU82, you did not get a chance to study Fitzpatrick's chipping today.

His approach shots were too damn good!

During a commercial, I played a YouTube video for my brother to show him how Fitzpatrick chips.

Otherwise, thoroughly enjoyed watching an exciting round with my brother and son -- two other fathers I love.

Seemed like a lot of commercials on the broadcast , I guess others felt the same way . NBC had picked up a big contract that Fox had signed and had to get some payback.
