Title: PGA Championship Thread
Post by: Herman Cain on May 16, 2022, 11:55:12 AM
Should be a wide open PGA Championship at Southern Hills. Tiger is in the field , Phil will not defend .

Here are some people CBS Sports likes

A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I’m a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald… striking. So, I’m on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one — big hitter, the Lama — long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he’s gonna stiff me. And I say, “Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.

If there weren't countless other higher caliber European/Belgian beers, maybe you'd have a point.  Its Bud loving idiots who think Stella is amazing cause AB told them it is.

Nobody is eating KFC in Japan cause it is fancy.  There are a million American brands that do great elsewhere cause they are American.  Stella is marketed as some elite brand with a fancy glass and posh imagery.  Its not cause its exotic, its cause AB cashes in on ignorant Americans who hear a brand they've never heard of and assume its fancy and high quality.

But hey, if you think the Asian markets view towards Western products and brands are the same as bro drinking culture in the US, go ahead.

You're wrong about this.

https://www.cnn.com/travel/article/kfc-christmas-tradition-japan/index.html

A typical KFC Christmas ad from the 1970s or '80s likely would have showcased a family enjoying a luscious feast of golden, fried chicken as the song "My Old Kentucky Home" played in the background.

"For anybody who grew up in America, you immediately knew that 'My Old Kentucky Home' is not a Christmas carol," says Bestor.

"But [these were] really beautifully done campaigns that linked fried chicken with Christmas as well as Christmas with the idea of consuming luxurious foods. Obviously, the idea took hold."

The latter goes without saying. But he’s Tiger Effen Woods, and he’s all about winning majors.

Tiger has a good pairing the first two rounds. Playing with Rory one of his closest friends on tour and has a good relationship Spieth. Should be a fun couple of days .

The weather will be warm which should help with Tigers back.

I’m NOT saying Tiger is faking being in some pain. But pain often seems worse for an athlete who’s not playing well, regardless of sport.

Tiger 🐯 appears to be miles away from legitimately being able to contend for anything. Which isn’t all that surprising given that he’s a relatively old man coming off a severe injury and trying to hang with younger, more talented golfers.

But I guess he still has a chance to find lightning in a bottle, as he did in Augusta and as Phil did a year ago.

Well, he's still the person Tiger Woods. He is no longer the golfer Tiger Woods, not the one we remember anyway.

But again, it's not like he's a bum. He showed in the first round at Augusta last month that he can put together a very good round, so I'm not dismissing the possibility of him putting together 4 very good rounds. But to expect it would be silly (and I know you don't expect it). Even wishing for it is pretty silly, but we fans can be that way no matter who we're rooting for.

He's made about $40MM in earnings.  Likely another $25MM+ in sponsorships/endorsements.  He's got 4 majors.  He's got a ton of injuries.  He's pretty open about not loving golf that much.  Unless he really wants a Masters, I wouldn't be surprised to just see him cruise the remainder of his career.

When Tiger is right on the cut line, I actually kind of want him to miss the cut.

It's beneath a golfer of his caliber to have to slop around on the weekend, trying to finish in the top 50, or within 20 strokes of the leaders. Especially when that golfer is playing on a bum leg.

I don't really feel "sorry" for him, but I do feel, "What's the point?"

When Tiger is in situations like he is right now, he always seems to  play well the last few holes to stay below the cut. Of course The media wants him to make the cut for the ratings. He will be in a featured group both days of the weekend even if he is last place lol

That’s who Tiger is right now. Not too many great athletes hang ‘em up in their prime. The point is he still wants to compete and fans still want to watch him play. Trying to bounce back from a horrific injury at his age is a compelling story imo even if/when he falls short.

Not surprising but through two tournies its been the same for Tiger.

Enough natural talent to pick up some clubs and play two rounds of solid enough golf.

But his rusty game/body cannot hold up for a full weekend.

Who is Mito?

He won twice (back-to-back) on the KFT last June to earn a promotion.  He had lost in a playoff the tournament before his back-to-back wins.  He would have been on tour earlier if not for covid, having won on the KFT in February of ‘20.  He was pretty dominant on the Latin American Tour before his promotion to KFT (Web at the time).  Only a matter of time before he wins on the big tour

Oh I’m not saying he didn’t have the right to play (which is darn nice of me, yes). But he was laboring yesterday, and limping, and obviously had nothing to gain by playing today.

He reportedly might not play tomorrow, which would be wise. Why punish yourself?

This might sound funny, but at this point the $$$ is secondary for Rory. He wants to win majors ... period. He's a bazillionaire and he'll make bazillions more. But winning another major (or multiple more majors) is everything to him.

Zalatoris hasn't made anything.  The putting adjustment that worked the first two days is not holding up today.

Everyone Mito included are playing inconsistent as heck.

If no one has a consistent back 9, he obviously wins.

But otherwise this thing is pretty wide open and will come down to the first guy to string a couple of birds together and eliminate bogies.

The leaderboard has had a lot of ebb and flow so far.

Mito should have been left alone by CBS but he handled himself very well.

Mito wanted to do it, CBS did not force him.

Okay.  I feel bad for Mito even though his name is Guillermo.

“Don’t let anybody tell you you can’t achieve something,” Thomas tweeted afterward.

Absolutely! I shank shots like that all the time. I'm almost a lock to win the tournament next year!

I told my 15 year old about that.  I told him that golf was all about managing your misses.

He said, "Oh, like marriage, then."

So we had a talk about comedic timing and knowing your audience.    Somehow, I got in trouble too.

I want to see Fitzpatrick do well.  I wonder how many people try cross handed chipping next week if he wins.
