Title: Rich Strike Incredible Performance
Post by: Herman Cain on May 08, 2022, 08:05:09 PM
This overhead camera angle show how incredible 80-1 Rich Strike and his jockey Sonny Leon performed coming from behind.

The move at the end to cut in was brilliant

One of the incredible things is that it totally caught the announcer by surprise.

He was so wrapped up in the favorites battling down the stretch that he never mentioned Rich Strike till the horse won.

I’ve watched that overhead video at least 15 times. Amazing. GO ahead and give that horse and jockey the “Best Sports Performance of 2022” trophy. Nobody is going to top that.

I saw an angle which showed RS eying those horses over the last 100 yards.   It was like he knew he was going to run them down.  Really cool.

One interesting thing I noticed on the NBC full race video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wIYD42DV3Ro) was that when they made that last move Rich Strike seemed to really want to stay on the rail but they jockey had to pull him hard to the right to pass the No. 6 horse on the outside. It's at about 1:50 in the video. I saw something where the jockey said that he realized with about 75 yards to go that they could win it. I'm guessing it's right when they made that pass and had clear track in front of them. It was amazing how quickly they ran those last two horses down.

They made the move to the right ,described above ,while accelerating which took a lot of skill and guts .

The pass RS made past Messier to the middle of the track was UNREAL.  From the overhead view it was beyond cool.

Messed up my Exacta Box that was seconds from coming in before the Strike.

A great story none-the-less.

Went to the Derby many times in the 90s in the infield with a group of derelicts. Each time we would pool some money together and each throw in $100 and bet the horse with the highest odds. Never won, (or at least I think I didn't). Wish we would have kept up that tradition.

Rich Strike will not run in The Preakness. Trainers are pointing toward The Belmont Stakes as his next race

Racing fans would have liked to have seen him go for the Triple Crown, but the reasoning for skipping the Preakness is sound.

Glad the humans are prioritizing the horse's health.

I wonder if this becomes more common now that 2 horses have done it in the last 7 years. While a great achievement, it’s not as special as being the first one to do it in almost 40 years.
