Title: OT - Loyola New Orleans
Post by: The Lens on April 27, 2022, 01:37:49 PM
Why is Loyola - New Orleans a NAIA school vs. being a NCAA DIII school?  Are they benefits or drawbacks to one or the other?

NAIA can offer athletic scholarships. NCAA D3 cannot. NAIA D1 is roughly on level with NCAA D2, and NAIA D2 is roughly on level with NCAA D3.

There used to be a lot more NAIA schools than there are now and they used to be mixed in conferences together with NCAA schools.  For instance, the WIAC (D3 Wisconsin schools) had both NCAA and NAIA members.  When Terry Porter played at Stevens Point, it was an NAIA school.  But back in the late 1980s, the NCAA started to require that its conferences be only made up of NCAA members so many NAIA members switched their membership.
