Title: Any chance of playing in MKE?
Post by: 5DollarPitcher on January 27, 2022, 09:35:05 AM
I have 0 idea how the seeding and snaking works. Can anyone enlighten me?

Nope.  A team can't play on its home court.

Obviously wouldn’t happen but they wouldn’t even do that for 1 overall seed?

The rule is if you play more than 4 games at a venue, you can’t play there for the tournament I believe.

This is why Villanova is only playing 3 games at the NBA arena in hopes that they get put in the East region.

Also, I really hope the badgers don’t get put in Milwaukee.

No.  It's an NCAA rule.

Insanely ridiculous loophole for Rodent fans. Of course the tourney would never be in, let’s say, Madison.

Given the Badgers record, I'd be surprised if they didn't get placed in Milwaukee.  Probably them and another B1G team as the two protected seeds in Milwaukee.

Except for that one time it was in Madison in 2002.

It's not really a "loophole."  The NCAA wants local teams so the arena is filled.

And Madison would deserve it if they are a top 4 seed anyway.

Does it matter who hosts? I forget if Villanova was the “host” at Wells Fargo or if it was the A10 or a different Philly school.

So even if we played all but 3 games at the Al, since we are the host, it wouldn’t matter.

I hate that they don't host more often. I wonder if it's because of hotel space. They hosted the Midwest Regional in 2002, which requires less hotel space than a first weekend set of games. The Kohl Hole was relatively new at the time, before that they hadn't hosted anything since 1969.

+1

I expect them to play in Milwaukee as they have before.

Penn is the host school.

WIAA Boys Basketball State Tournament usually conflicts with the first weekend of the NCAA Tournament.  The Kohl Center also hosts hockey and wrestling state tournaments, so there aren't a lot of dates to move things around.

As for hotel space, I've heard that reasoning, too.  But there have been a ton of hotels built in Madison in the last 20 years.  I don't think lack of hotels would be an issue.

In addition, there aren't many seeds ahead of them for whom Milwaukee would be the preferred option. Baylor and Kansas likely go to Fort Worth, Arizona and UCLA likely go to San Diego, Duke and Auburn likely end up in Greenville, Purdue to Indy, 'Nova to Pittsburgh, Gonzaga to Portland, really only Michigan State might be ahead of Wisconsin and angling for Milwaukee. As there will be two seeded teams there, they are in good shape even if they're a 4-seed.

The UW doesn't want to (or can't) host early NCAA tournament games because it hosts the WIAA Boys basketball tournament and has to keep open weekends on their schedule to host Big Ten hockey tournament games.  This is the reason they pulled out of hosting the girls tournament a couple of years ago too.

They only weekend they could realistically host this year would be the regionals, and IMO the NCAA hasn't been hosting those in smaller on-campus locations for awhile.

Seems like a lot of lost revenue since the Pavilion only seats 6,500 to possibly not even get placed there anyway.

Agreed—seems like a risky business adventure at best.

I wish they had games in Chicago. That would be more realistic than Madison and a GREAT placement for MU....

Why not? If they play well, they should be in Milwaukee. It would be great for the game to have a couple regional teams help fill the arena and create a buzz.

If we keep playing like this, we'll end up in Indianapolis as a three or four seed! Not sure I want to go there because it has some VERY, VERY BAD memories.

AKA 1978!

Regionals in Chicago this year.

...and 1969 regionals.

I was at that game and sat near the edge of the court. When Purdue's Rick Mount leaped into the air and made the winning basket in OT with 2 seconds left on the clock, my heart sank. I joked some years later that I should have rushed onto the court and tackled him, even if I did wind up getting my ass tossed in jail for that.

First two rounds, RCA Dome.  Beat Holy Cross and Missouri to go to the Sweet 16.

One of the first college basketball games I remember going to was the 2005 regional semis at Allstate Arena.

Illinois vs. UW-Milwaukee and Oklahoma St. vs. Arizona. Wonder what the Graham brothers are up to now.

Looking back, it seems pretty comical that a regional location was Allstate Arena of all places.

The seeding for this tournament is going to leave a lot of south and southeast teams disappointed.  The only first round sites in that region are Ft Worth and Greenville.

But Baylor, Kansas, Auburn, Duke, Tennessee, LSU, Houston, Kentucky, and Texas Tech are all in line for protected seeds right now.

Indianapolis will be a competitive site to get too, with MSU, Wisco, Purdue, Kentucky, Tennessee, Xavier, and maybe even MU angling for that spot.
