Title: Marquette in the Winter Olympics
Post by: Galway Eagle on January 11, 2022, 09:23:59 AM
Be sure to tune into speed skating and cheer for Emery Lehman a college of engineering alum who's in his third Winter Olympics.

That’s quite the accomplishment!
I’ve been to three winter games, only managed speed skating tix in Lillehammer ( saw Bonnie Blair yay!). The speed skating races are fun.

I remember having prospective Olympic speed skaters in my class, drawn to MU because of the proximity of the Petitt Center. Though with Salt Lake building an indoor facility I think a lot of Olympic training has moved there. Still very cool for MU.

There was 2 at MU at one point recently  but one left to go to school/train at Colorado.

It’s so hard to tell how fast they’re actually going on TV, but I imagine they just have to be zooming by in person, right?

Okay I’m going back to 1994 now- fast but as they skate in pairs, it was easy to keep track.
As an aside, I was at Men’s figure skating practice while Dan Janssen was skating his final race in another arena, ( might have been another town, tbh) where he won the gold. The Norwegian PA announcer was keeping everyone updated as to his status, and honestly the Norwegians were almost more excited he won the gold than the Americans- they were jubilant and congratulating all the American fans.
At Bonnie Blair’s race we were a section over from the Blair bunch, and I have a photo of her after she climbed into the stands to sit with her family while waiting for the other racers to finish.

I read once that it depends where the next Olympics are. If at altitude, many prefer to train in SLC. If near sea level, Milwaukee.

Took bronze this AM! Surprised Marquette social media hasn't mentioned it, my (and his) high school social media is going crazy about it.

Edit: apparently I missed some posts MU did announce it
