The Lopez one hurt the most for me, if only because I was in a bar full of Stanford fans in Mexico. At least I got a lot of free drinks after that as the bartender befriended me and kept yelling "LOS MARQUETTES!" and ringing a bell nearly ever time we scored.

that game was the first time I'd ever heard of MU. After church, we went to my grandmother's house for dinner. I was watching that game in her living room and was immediately drawn to MU. My dad called me into the dining room for dinner, turning off the TV, and I didn't know who won that game for a ling time. But I did know I liked this college team called Marquette.

I thought long and hard about that one.   Place was rocking, Pops Sims had a career day, all there for the taking.     I was not the guy throwing pennies, but I was in the student section and it was nuts.       The thing that stopped me it that the David Rivers shot a year prior hurt me worse in the moment.      Looking back, the UNC loss was a negative turning point for the program.

Brother Lenny,

I thought about adding that Rick Mount shot as well. But in that game, if Rick Cobb had hit his free throws at the end of regulation, there would have been no Rick Mount shot.

Was not at that game, but it kept us out of our first final four.

Ah yes. The Joe Wolf homecoming game
Was also at that game. Most electric atmosphere I ever experienced at a game.

The UNC was the most electric atmosphere I ever saw for a regular season game and that is saying a lot. That weekend was unreal, starting Friday night at The Gym Bar watching the replay of the championship game, selling tshirts and hanging With Rick for a bit. Sadly, it ended in a very big disappontment. That game had everything you would want as an MU fan aside from the win.

Brother Goose:

Ditto on all accounts.

I was a teen in Nashville the day that game was played and, like you, took it hard. Cobb was a decent guy and also one of my favorites.

What’s even worse is that it is impossible to hate Rick Mount. He also was an incredibly decent dude and a fellow I’d love to have a beer with some Friday afternoon, even if he did go to Purdue!

Talked to Ric about that, his comment was at least I made the first one.  Worst play was when Dean let George bring the ball up at the end of the game and George Faeber picked his pocket, there would have been no free throws if Dean would have brought the ball up.

In fairness to Ric, no one person loses a game, a team does. The free throw may have been the most obvious mistake (like not fouling last week against Creighton) but everybody on that floor contributed equally to  putting Ric in a spot where he HAD to make the free throws.

That game aggravated the hell out of me — until the Ohio State game two years later.

Those were the days and we hope many more are ahead!

I was a junior in college and it broke my heart, too! After beating Kentucky on Thursday night the team and we fans were on cloud 9.Three of us drove up to Madison with our girlfriends for the Purdue game Saturday.. We did a good job on Mount but they also had two other really good players (Keller and Gilliam if I remember correctly). The ride home was the longest, most somber 90 miles imaginable.

Thanks for posting that video. It had been years since I had seen it.

I was sitting on the exact opposite side of the court from where Wilson inbounded the ball. Front row, and had a perfect view. And yet the memory plays tricks -- I had remembered it from being almost at half-court when he released it, but the video evidence is pretty clear that it was more like 30 feet.

The scene afterward was wild. I remember Wilson ended up sitting on top of the rim.

I love hearing Rivers talk about it in this clip you posted, love hearing how excited he remains about it years later: "It's funny; if Notre Dame football is on, I at some point go back to that shot ... and I love it!" I have the exact same reaction to this day, seriously -- I see ND and I think about that shot.

To most of us at Marquette then, he was Glenn, not Doc. Truly a nice guy, and a great ambassador for the university and the basketball program.

where I went to basketball camp in middle school Mount was an annual presenter and our shooting coach. The guy was an absolute dick but could make everything he put up. I remember one year some kid was talking and laughing and Mount called him out and dared him to make three shots in a row. The kid did and Mount said "you got lucky, now sit down."

Favorite play: Glenn Rivers' heave to beat ND on 1/10/81. Bedlam ensued!
Favorite game (non NCAAT): 1/9/19 at Creighton. It was absolutely impossible to win that game. Sam's amazing shot that they reviewed for what seemed like forever; Markus with 53.
Favorite game (NCAAT): The Tony Miller game vs. Kentucky, 1/20/94; The Dwyane Wade game vs. Kentucky, 3/29/03. (I "liked" Marquette in 1977 but had no attachment yet.)
Favorite game attended (non NCAAT): Marquette beats ND on Rivers' heave, 1/10/81.
Favorite game attended (NCAAT): Marquette beats Mizzou, 3/22/03. Diener shines, Wade is Wade, Novak takes over in OT, we're in Sweet 16!
Favorite season: 2012-13. Beat Madison; started BEast title-winning campaign with Junior's shot and ended it with Vander's drive; ranked throughout second half of season; beat ND; drama vs. Davidson; beat Miami (game I attended) to reach Elite Eight. It just felt like the program was all the way back. (Sadly ... no!)
Favorite player: Sam Worthen, my first "star" as a Marquette student. Later: Wade, Diener, Jae, Markus.
Favorite coach: Really, really liked Hank and Rick ... but from a coaching standpoint, loved the toughness of Buzz's teams.
Favorite team: My freshman year, 1978-79, had a lot of fun and/or quirky characters: Oliver Lee, Sam, Artie, Toone, Jim Dudley, Odell Ball. But for delivering the goods, 2002-03 and Buzz's S16-S16-E8 teams.

yeah, that 1999-2000 team with Martin with #1 much of the season. We played them on ESPN on a Sunday (back when that was a huge deal) and we were down 29-2 at one point. I remember Martin blocking a shot about 10 rows into the stands. If Martin doesn't break his leg in the CUSA tourney they may have been able to beat Michigan State for the title that year. He was an absolute beast in college.

If I'm talking about the stakes involved, the worst for me was the 2013 EE game vs. Cuse. We never ever got a damn thing going in that one.

But for pure crap-ti-tude, I think the worst had to be Marquette's 51-50 loss at DePaul in 2010. DePaul really sucked -- fired Wainwright a few games earlier and were on a long losing streak -- and we were an NCAAT team. But we played dreadfully and let DePaul hang around. Lazar missed at the line and some DePaul player threw in a jumper at the buzzer to win it in the final second.

One of my favorite games attended was the win over Duke at Dane County Coliseum in 1980, my sophomore year. Duke had Gminski and Banks and were big favorites, but we built a pretty big lead and held 'em off. IIRC it had to be moved to Madison because NBC wanted it in the afternoon and the Arena was booked then. Being on national TV was a huge deal back then.

What was cool is that the place was rocking with Marquette students; most sweater-vests didn't make the trip. After the win, we stormed the court. That win played a major role in MU making the NCAAs that season.

I remember Martin blocking a shot about 10 rows into the stands.
I remember that too! It wasn't too hard to get close to the court in those pre-Wade days.
