Sounds like Shaka runs his practices the same way Dean Smith did at North Carolina.

"Every single drill is a competition."
I don't know how this compares to Wojo but this is what I want to see out of our coach. When Urban Meyer was at Ohio State, I saw a behind-the-scenes on their football practice where he tried to turn everything into a fight. He wanted an all-out, junkyard dog mentality on every play and every drill. He had guys doing tug of war with tires and they were fighting with everything they had. If Shaka can replicate that attitude - and Urban's success, personal stuff aside - I think we'll all be quite happy.
-
I find it interesting that folks don't remember Wojo saying all the right things. Of course he didn't DO or follow through on those things, but he had an impeccable PR game.

Like what? His entire PR was built around being a player and Noon ball games? He never talked X&Os, scheme, metrics for success.
Shaka wants 32 deflections a game. That's public record. Did you ever hear Wojo cite a key to success? He's most famous for yelling try harder in huddles.
I'm not here to pile on the dead but Wojo's PR game was actually pretty non existent the past 6 years save for talking about being tired. We heard Win Everyday but we never heard how.
Noon Ball
Play Harder
Our Guys are Tired
That's all I got.

Short memory. He said all the right things when he was hired too.

What did he say? What specifics were cited?

“We’re gonna win big and we’re gonna win big in March”

Yeah, Wojo said all the right things, but they were all in the big-picture sense. I can't ever remember him talking anything about any basketball strategies or specifics on game planning or anything like that.

Neither did buzz. Talked about upsetting the salt shaker, or some such.

Sand and water but he also had switchables.
What we really need to see before making a judgement is Shaka’s in game huddle speeches.

How quickly Scoop forgets the whiteboard punch.
-
Buzz obsessed over Paint Touches. While he didn’t cite a # he did indicate to us what he valued. Same with TC on deflections.

And, of course, We’re Very Young.

Enjoyed the read.
If it was really accurate, opposing coaches have screenshotted/printed the post for future reference. ;)

You’re kidding, right? Buzz could go through a game possession by possession and tell you what we did right or wrong. Wojo had trouble just keeping track of the score.

That made me laugh, Lenny.
And it shouldn’t have because it was effen true. Ugh.

I don’t know how it compares with Wojo, either, but it’s quite common in coaching.
I have worked with three good high school basketball coaches, and all three made everything a competition. Losers had to run or do burpees or carry water bottles or whatever. Every single drill.
I’d be much more surprised if Shaka didn’t do that.

Wojo had bricks and balloon pop.

At a preseason practice? No, not kidding at all. We would be hearing about defense, senior leadership, how the offense wasn't installed yet.
After a game, yes, he would talk about specifics when he wasnt arguing with Mac.

As long as we shoot well from the line, we’ll be great.

Thank You for posting. Crisco is solid and an awesome coach. He was at our place watching the Bucks beat the Hawks on the road to advance to the finals. Trust his summary and analysis great job.
