I know I am changing the subject here, but when did the word "die" fall out of favor?  Is it politically incorrect now?

I’m glad I’m not the only person to wonder that.

I still say so-and-so died.

It's all about context, my friend.

The former CEO of my organization was a relatively young widow, and when she spoke about her husband, she wouldn't say, "He passed away", or "He's no longer with us", she would just say, "He died".

She was a doctor, so I took her lead as to what was appropriate in that respect.

In that regard, is it appropriate for an atheist to say that a person "passed"?  It' connotes that the person is going from one place to another, doesn't it?

Frankly when it comes to someone speaking about a person close to them dying, they can say whatever makes them comfortable. It’s so personal. I don’t really think there needs to be a rule here.

In the 1971 Milwaukee Classic, Marquette beat Carl Tacy's Marshall team 74-72 in the championship game of the Classic.
After the game, Tacy refused to shake Al McGuire's hand. "I didn't like the guy," McGuire told Sports Illustrated. "He is a phony, an Elmer Gantry."

After MU's one-point win over Kansas State, the Warriors took apart Wake Forest (now coached by Tacy) in the second half behind 18 points from an inspired Bernard Toone, leading Marquette to the Final Four.

McGuire and Tacy shook hands after the game. The headline in the next day's St. Louis Post-Dispatch summed up the game and the relationship: "McGuire, Tacy Bury Hatchet."

Go Warriors!

Tymes up--Russell Lee and Mike D'Antoni
Title: Re: Former Wake Forest Coach Carl Tacy Passes

D'Antoni was the highest profile player on that Thundering Herd team.
Back then, MU scheduled some outstanding teams in the old Classic.

Here was Al's way of saying someone died: "He cashed in his chips."

Enjoy the historical anecdotes, fellas, they keep everything in the game in good perspective.
Those anecdotes also remind us of how the game was played and how it has changed over the years.

Everyone stay well.

Peace.

Go Warriors!

Wouldn’t Russell Lee have been? If you go by the present, D’Antoni’s name is most instantly recognized by basketball fans.  But researched Lee after 4ever dropped his name-  guy was an absolute stud at Marshall, and went on to be drafted 6th overall by the Bucks.  That’s pretty lofty.

But this was before I could have followed MU unfortunately.  Born just too late to recall Al era 😢

Absolutely correct about teams Classic would bring in. Miss the old Classic, even when it lost prestige in the 80’s and 90’s.  It was still a fun event.

Yeah, Lee was the star of that team with 22ppg and 12 rpg.  D’Antoni was very good as well.  That was a very competitive game as the Thunderng Herd was a very good team.

Before Tacy arrived at Marshall, MU played Marshall in the semifinals of the 1967 NIT. That Thundering Herd team was coached by Ellis Johnson, who was Adolph Rupp's first All-America at Kentucky. Back then, comedian Soupy Sales was one of the more famous alums of Marshall.

Sister Chick:

Back in the dark ages of the 1970s, this was a bugaboo with Journalism teachers everywhere. Damn, I wish I had a nickel for every time one of the J-School professors screamed that people do not pass away, they do not expire and they do not pass into everlasting life. THEY DIE!

Nothing new here. Nothing to see. Move on. Some people are idiots.

My close high school friend whose Dad worked for the FBI just passed from complications due to Covid 19. And if we want to say he passed we will.
I have made Jason Bourne look like a sissy many times. I have been in knife, chrome bar and gun fights for you. I am out of all that 🙂
