Title: Who is more surprising: Buycks or Toscano-Anderson?
Post by: Eldon on February 23, 2020, 12:50:23 PM
IMO, both are shocking (in a good way, obviously).  But which is more shocking?

Making the league? Juan. But it was more surprising how well Buycks did once he got there

No one who knows anything about basketball would ever say Juan was a better college player and more likely to have an nba career.

How many three game losing streaks did each have?   Maybe that’s how we can sort it out.

I think Juan. There was a thought Buycks would be better in a more iso type of style like the NBA. Both have done a great job of developing their games after MU.

Juan for sure. Buycks was frustratingly inconsistent at times, but he had stretches where he lit it up. Juan was never more than an athletic spark plug or role player. Incredible for him to come this far

Did Juan even start at MU?

Why are you hypenating?  His last name is Anderson.

Yeah, I believe 77 starts.

Buycks was a talented guard who took a back seat on teams with other talented guards.  He had size and could play the point.   He certainly put in the work, post MU.
Juan was a non entity until his senior year and then still never put up numbers.    He certainly under achieved at MU, relative to his high school ranking and finally making it to the league.     Good for both of them.

Gotta go with Juan. Never expected either to make it, though.

I completely agree. Buycks was a baller who could play either the '1' or the '2' spot. He had NBA skills more than college skills. I expected him in the NBA at some point.

Juan showed a lot of different skills at different times, but was unable to get his game together. I am surprised by where he ended up.

I couldn't even make a choice. Such a toss-up.
After his collegiate career came to an end, I followed Buycks on social media and was really impressed with his desire to play at the next level. He really worked for it and improved more than I could have imagined. He more than held his own when he got his chances in the NBA, but an even bigger sign of his improvement was in the TBT. He was head and shoulders better than teammates that he previously took a backseat to. That's a credit to him.
As for Juan, I figured he was always destined for the NBA based on his high school highlight tape alone. :)

^This.  Buycks was very surprising, but he showed more skill and athleticism that Juan did in college.  The fact that Juan now has a NBA game high higher than he ever had in conference play in college??  Astonishing IMO.

Can our resident stats gurus find another 4-year college player that had a higher NBA game total, particularly in his rookie year, than he ever had in conference play in college?

I voted for Buycks. I thought he was terrible at MU. Juan had super athleticism. Happy for both...great stories!

I was quite surprised when I first heard that Buycks was on an NBA roster.

Juan? "Surprised" doesn't even begin to describe it. Absolutely stunned is more like it.

Thrilled for the young man. He seems like a real good guy with a great work ethic.

Buycks was a Buzz guy......

Buzz guys have a "certain grit"......

I do not need to say the list.....It is pretty apparent how it has served them well in the NBA.....

Buycks always had the grit......The talent was the question......

I thought Juan was not motivated enough and weak.....The talent was also a question even though rated in the Top 75 coming out of high school.....

The most surprising NBA player next to Tom Copa......

Apparently playing in the "gang-bangers" Mexican league really can tough you up.....Against all odds he has succeeded......I give the kid credit.....He has improved from where he was to the extent of a Wade.....a Butler.....a Matthews.....

I am not saying he is any of those guys or close......I am saying .....Where he was......to where he is now.....

Juan played his first three seasons for Buzz...

There were plenty of players who played for Buzz and didn't have a certain "grit."  Jamil Wilson, Todd Mayo, JaJuan Johnson, Steve Taylor, Jamail Jones, Erik Williams, Joe Fulce, etc.

It’s clear who Wojo needs to recruit.

Not a bad list, but disagree about Fulce.  He was usually injured, but he had "grit."
