hmm, kinda a neat snapshot of history. https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/leaders/pts-player-career.html
Interesting looking at where the names landed and who Markus might pass by the time he's done.

Worth noting, the Sports Reference page only goes back to 1985-86. It's a fine list, but it's definitely incomplete.

If Markus howard averages 20 points a game for the rest of the season (13 games minimum) 11 regular, at least 1 BET and at least 1 post season tournament game. He will crack the top 10 scoring all time.

Ah, I did not catch that. Thanks for pointing that out.

His brother holds the 28 spot right now.

The Wikipedia list is more complete but only goes to #25:

Getting into the top-10 isn't impossible, but it would be a Herculean feat. If he continues averaging 28.4 ppg like he is now, he would crack the top-10 (passing Hersey Hawkins) in the national title game, assuming we also went to the Big East title game. To get there, he needs 1,054 points on the season. The most likely way for him to get there would be to increase his scoring. If he keeps up the 30.3 ppg he's been scoring since the start of Big East play, he could get into the career top-10 in the Elite 8 (again, requiring a BET title game appearance), which would still be an incredible feat but probably more reachable.

Should make for some interesting calls and texts when he passes Jordan.
-
When its all said and done, Markus will have set an unbreakable Marquette record.
Nobody is coming close in career points, not a chance in hell unless the NCAA and NBAPA decide players have to stay in college all four years.
Markus is the unique combination of being the best scorer in the country, but at the same time, not a great enough NBA prospect for him to leave early.

It would be awesome for Markus to hit top 10, but just getting onto that top 25 list would be amazing. Knocking off Byron Larkin, passing guys like Hank Gathers, Otis Birdsong and Danny Manning. Wow!
And when you look at P6 schools, the only additions in the last 30 years have been McDermott, Hansbrough and Reddick. Everyone else is earlier or from a mid-major school. A new P6 guy doesn't get onto this list often.

And even McDermott spent 75% of his career in the Missouri Valley.
Looking at high major guys from the past 35 years, Glenn Robinson at Purdue, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf at LSU, and Dennis Hopson at Ohio State are the only ones to have a season average higher than where Howard is at right now. Though the craziest stat I think is that Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers both averaged 29+ in the same season for LMU. Howard is definitely chasing and flirting with a lot of history.
If ever a guy from outside a top-4 seed could win NPOY, it might be Howard this year. With no dominant teams or players, the kind of numbers he's putting up are just silly. If Marquette is rolling and Howard is the must-watch attraction in the sport (which right now, plenty of media types are indicating he is) then his sheer volume may overwhelm less impressive stat lines at higher ranked programs.
-
Whats crazy, and also impressive, is looking at the spot Markus could hold when you consider the difference in games played, due to either scheduling or tournament success that Markus unfortunately hasn't gotten to experience. For example, JJ Reddick and Tyler Hansborough both scored more as freshman, but trail Markus' average the next 3 years, fairly significantly actually, but if Marquette wins 1 in the BET and, lets say, makes the S16, thats 15 more games. Markus will end up with 132 GP. JJ played 139, Psycho T played 142, and the top dog in those new P6 guys, McDermott, played 145 games to get his totals.

moved list of NCAA 100 to top post

Thanks oldwarrior81.
The numbers Maravich put up in three years without a shot clock or 3-point shot continue to amaze me. Just staggering.

Always a big fan of Byron Larkin. Closest comparison to MH.

How so? Larkin was significantly taller and he couldn’t shoot the 3 well, that’s why he didn’t get any NBA looks. Also played much softer competition in the old MCC. If Markus was 6’3, he’d be a first round pick.

My god, some salty Badger/non-Marquette fans in the replies. The Marshall Henderson comparison is my favorite ::)

maybe Shane Larkin from Miami? He was a little under 6' and shot the ball a bit better than Uncle Byron.
-
Thanks for that list, ow81. When Markus gets his 34th point Friday at Butler, he will be the 71st player ever to hit the 2,500-point mark.

This makes a lot more sense. Markus is a better shooter but Larkin was more of a PG-distributor who could score but the comparison is a bit better

Byron was a /much/ better shooter than Shane in college. As a 2G, Byron shot 52% for his career in an era when the midrange was still a thing. Meanwhile, Shane shot about 44% from the floor. Byron was a helluva shooter and scorer. Shane, not as much.

Weird rant! I know nothing about Byron but Shane shot 41% from 3 & 54% from 2 as a sophomore. Seems very good to me?

That's fine, but his uncle was sublime

Shane was a career 43% shooter. Byron checks in at 52% (injuries in his junior season being the only campaign under 50%).

Shane shot 48% his sophomore year while shooting 5 3s per game, which lowers overall percentage.

But again, a player 4-5 inches taller than Markus who shot under 35% from 3 as a senior, on less than 2 attempts a game, 30 years ago...is the best comparison for him? Just sounds like another volume scorer from your youth you enjoyed watching that you're forcing a comparison to another volume scorer.
-
Markus leading nation in free throws made (15 more than the closest, in 1 less game), and only 1 behind in free throws attempted (in 1 less game). Crazy for a guy his size.
-
'bout time the refs put some respect on his name!
-
I know Markus is modest and all about family, but you know deep down that his sweetest point will be 2,525.

Why? Is he a Zager and Evans fan?

self bump
-
Looks like Markus is going to be passing some College Basketball all timers the next game. Also, he is 1 3pt make away from tying the all time Big East record.
-
Markus could realistically pass Redick into 20th place by the end of the regular season. Would need to average 28.6.

I was recently told markus was past his peak and/or dead.
