Title: Chart Markus' Impact On The Program
Post by: Not A Serious Person on January 20, 2020, 06:45:49 AM
In the Updated Projections thread, I uploaded a KenPom Ranking chart back to 1997.

I downloaded all of KenPom's season averages back to 1997.

I thought these charts were interesting.  They show Markus' impact on the program.

They show MU's Rank versus the other 353 D1 programs.

Here is MU's 3p% ranking.  The Markus Howard era is easy to spot.  Markus' Freshman year we were the #1 3p% team in the country.  This year we are fifth.

MU's Offensive Efficiency took a significant turn once Markus steps on campus

His “impact on the program” is exactly zero until he is a member of a team that actually wins a tournament game.

This is one way to measure it ... not the only way.

According to this measure, Loyola's team two years ago was better than every MU team since 2003.  Do you really believe this?  If you do, then you must also believe the entire season is not but an exhibition/practice session for the real season that starts in mid-March.

Can see the Rowsey/Markus era ... and the Novak/Deiner era in 2003/2004

I guess this is the flip side of the Markus era.  While we rank as one of the best 3P shooting teams in the nation, we also rank near the worst 2P shooting teams in the nation.

I do think Loyola’s team two years ago was better than every MU team since 2003. That was a phenomenal squad of upper classmen. The only comparable MU team, in my opinion, was the Butler, Crowder, DJO team that lost in the Sweet 16.

In the new world of advance analytics, wins are an archaic way to measure success

Breaking: Juan Anderson has officially had a bigger impact on the program than Markus since he was a part of a team that won a tournament game.

The team that was tied for 11th in the BE, an 11 seed and finished .500 in conference play. That team?

And Robert Horry had a bigger impact on the NBA with 7 NBA championship rings than Michael Jordan, Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Larry Bird or Magic Johnson.
