Title: [Paint Touches] How can MU maximize Howard’s historic offense?
Post by: PaintTouches on October 18, 2019, 02:11:32 PM
As long as he can breathe, Markus is going to score. But I dug in to some Synergy stats to see how Marquette could put him in the best position to succeed. Contrary to what I've been preaching all summer, it is not by running him off of screens.

Great article.  One add with MU’s bigs, MU will be more of a transition team this year where Markus shot 43% on threes.

One comment, as the year progressed, defenses clogged the screens for Markus with double and triple teams as he was the only playmaker who could create his own shot. Koby is a key.

These are two of my three reasons why I think MU is a better team this season, the third being defense.  The main question mark is how will Wojo will replace the Hausers’ shooting.

In theory, the shooting is already here. Anim shot 39.1% last year, McEwen shot 36% in two years at USU, Cain & Elliott both showed promise as freshmen, and Bailey shot 42.1% over the last 6 games. If we can put 2-3 guys alongside Howard that at least need to be respected at the arc, we should be okay.

But that is, admittedly, hoping for sustained success from guys who've mostly only done it in small sample sizes or with low usage.

I have been puzzled by the lack of 3 point shooting refrain.  Brew rightly states that there are multiple players other than Markus who have hit 3s at a reasonable rate.    Yes, two elite shooters left.   But others will step up.   The circle of life.

Honestly, my biggest worry about three point shooting decline is not the departure of the Hausers but the departure of Brett Nelson. We know we have guys that can hit shots, it's just a matter of making sure they are consistent & well-coached. Hopefully Presutti or the rest of the staff can fill that role.

They do not necessarily need to be consistent. They need to be threats. 2 out of the 5 being on in a game is enough.

Good point, but they need to at least show they can hurt teams that ignore them to overpursue Markus. The pieces are there, Wojo just has to put it together.

The key question for me is can they do it with usage?  With usage comes defensive focus.

How would the new distance for the 3 point line factor into these statistics?

Only Markus won't be affected
