Last year he did it 3 times and was within a bucket twice. I think he'll be better this year. I went 6, though I don't think it means he'll be a lottery pick.

Can't find better info, but it looks like if he went 6 that would be most in the NCAA in the past 25 years or so.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-basketball/news/the-commonality-of-the-40-point-scorer-in-college-basketball/

"Adam Morrison's five 40-point games during 2005-06 is a record over the past 15 years for most 40-point games in one season"

Of course he'd still be no Pete Maravich

Pete Maravich, the incredible 6-foot-5 guard from Louisiana State University during the late ’60s, averaged an incredible 44.2 points per game and led the NCAA in scoring for three seasons. He also has the college record for the most 50-point games (10) and 40-point games (56).

And he played for some of the crappiest teams in the SEC  in his three years at LSU. It helps to have Daddy run the offense around you.

What did Pistol Pete teach me: I'd rather be good as a team than have one player shoot the lights out!

My favorite McGuire quote: (radio interview) After Press Maravich said "watching a team like Marquette play defense is like watching grass grow" McGuire grabbed the mic and said "if you think it's like watching grass grow, your ass is grassed and I'm your lawn mower."

McGuire gloated after the game about how Marquette shut Pistol Pete down.

That was great, but nothing tops his “son” retort to Adolph Rupp about not dying intestate.

Not really.

LSU's offense in those days was the ball was inbounded to Maravich, pass to allow Maravich to dribble again. Maravich from 40. BOTTOM.

Or "clank"

End of discussion.

Crappy teams. Press Maravich, aka Daddy, had a losing record from 1966 to 1972 at LSU. That tells me all I need to know about Daddy and Sonny Boy.

Press was fired in 1972 and replaced with Dale Brown.

1-2.  The team is going to be more defensive minded this year.  There will be less scoring in general.  I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see the offense being a thing of beauty unless someone else makes a giant leap forward to help spread the floor and/or create shots.  It will be interesting to see if the team demands more scoring from Markus vs. more of a complete PG game.  I know what the scouts want to see.  I'm sure he'll still go off against a couple of overwhelmed opponents, but I'm predicting fewer ridiculous scoring nights.

Bullcrap

I saw most of those LSU teams as a kid. In no way were they like us last year.

For one thing, say what you want about Wojo, our coach has a winning record.

We have shown steady improvement in Coach Wojo's four years here. Perhaps the ascent is not steep enough, but we have improved.

Notwithstanding the little revolution after the season, I honestly believe we played more like a team, even with the Brothers Hauser, than LSU ever did.

Wojo>Press. Only a basketball neophyte would think otherwise.

MU 2018 > LSU 1970 -- Without a doubt.

Brother dgies,

The facts (overall record, conference record, offensive dominance/usage by one player) indicate that the two teams were similar in terms of accomplishment and style. What you "saw as a kid" (or more accurately what you remember/think you saw as a kid) stands in contradiction with those facts. Sorry but your recollections from almost 50 years ago doesn't change those facts.

Wojo's record at MU, what MU's current trajectory is and "Wojo is a better coach than Press Maravich" are beside the point. I was only comparing two teams - 1970 LSU and 2019 Marquette. Nothing more.

I was at the final game at Auburn's old arena several years ago and they were of course doing old memories during breaks. One of the updates was that pistol Pete had the record for the most points ever in a game there - a record he set in the very first game ever played there. Imagine that, you open a gym with a big scoring night and noone in history ever tops your mark

They talked on the broadcast about how Markus was the third player to drop 40 on consecutive days, joining Pete Maravich (did it twice) and Johnny Neumann. What they didn't mention was that the last time it happened was 48 YEARS ago when Neumann did it in 1971.

A couple fun facts about Markus' record scoring spree in Orlando...

  • The single-game mark was previously held by fellow Marquette player Matt Carlino with 38, but another player, Duane Wilson, had 30 in a single game in that tournament.
  • The old tournament record was 77 points, held by Justin Robinson of Monmouth in 2015. Robinson set the record while also beating the USC Trojans in the third-place game.
  • The USC team that lost to Monmouth featured Katin Reinhardt, who would become a teammate of Howard's in the 2016-17 season. Maybe the Disney magic passed from Robinson to Howard through Reinhardt?
  • Robinson took the record from Michael Beasley, who scored 73 in 2007, but he came one basket away from a Marquette player having that record. Lazar Hayward scored 70 in Orlando in 2009, and had he been able to get up a shot in the last second of the finals loss to FSU, may have shared the record with Beasley (Hayward stole the ball with 1 second left of a 1-point loss but didn't get a shot off).

Damn dude. This is seriously intricate sh!t, I love it thank you

He’s dropping hohum 40 point games. Gonna miss this kid - I’m 29 and it’s definitely possible we don’t see another scorer like this in my lifetime at MU. No chance his scoring record is beaten in my lifetime.

Probably should have had 40 in the Prov game, and the only reason he didn’t blow by 40 on Wed against X was cause Wojo had him only pass the last 5 min, and it was very obvious. And that 35 was “quiet”. It’s unreal

I just find it hard to believe Maravich only did it twice. I saw him play in the Milwaukee Classic and  he scored
43 points in each game. I think it was a sophomore year. The only thing that makes sense to me is that he rarely scored less than 40 so he had big streaks of scoring 40 points a game.

The reason he only did it twice is because it was on consecutive days. The only time you play on consecutive days is in non-conference events like that, and there were fewer of them back then.

Agreed on the handle. His numbers for finishing in traffic at the rim are actually not very good this year, but he got calls on drives in the second half that it doesn't seem he has been getting all that much. I think the biggest thing he's got going right now is that he has an unreal ability to score at every level out to nearly 30 feet. He had Gtown on a string basically today. Stopped and popped, drove to the rim, stepbacks.......unbelievable offensive exhibition by Markus today. Gtown had no answer for all the different ways he attacked them. I was concerned he may run out of gas, but it was nice to see McEwen and Jayce make some big plays down the stretch to help out.

The freshmen would almost fill the arena for the early game, and a majority of the crowd left before the 3-win varsity played.

My biggest issue with Howard is the missing pieces around him. I think I would like him a lot more if he was needed to take so many shots. Part of of my negative bias stems from the lack of having a complete team. So, it comes down to my belief that Wojo has not put together a complete team.

One of the most incredible MU games I've personally witnessed, Al McGuire's 1970 NIT team held Pistol to 20 pts. at The Garden in the tournament semi-final in something like 25% field goal shooting. As the New York Post sports headlines exclaimed the next day, "Pistol Pete Met Defeat," hey?

I watched Pete play in the Milwaukee Classic and he was truly as amazing. He was quick, a great ball handler and could shoot from anywhere on the court. He w a s unstoppable. Like Markus he wasn't a ball hog just the best player on the court.  And consider he scored 40+ points when there weren't 3 point shots.

This.  And despite my extreme happiness that the Warriors beat Pete at the Garden, he was hung over from a night of debauchery.  He had the troubles until much later in life.

Yes,up close and personal as an MU freshman. I had the great fortune of attending Marquette during its most successful run in its basketball history. Freshman year=NIT Champs...last year of dental school=NCAA Champs and all the glory in between, hey?
MU was physically intimidating and won most games before they even started back in those days. We were truly the number two program after UCLA.

Not only did we shut down Pete in that NIT run but we also contained Dr J. That particular NIT field was incredible.

Markus used every trick in his bag to score 42 against the Hoyas, and Marquette needed every one of them, as well as some help from his assistants.

I love how people here speak breathlessly about Maravich, even though LSU accomplished nothing as a team when he was there, yet the same fanbase will downgrade Markus' accomplishments because the team hasn't accomplished anything during his tenure.

Appreciate him while he is here.  Don't wait 50 years.

LSU was 3-24 and drawing less than a couple thousand fans to a game during Maravich's freshman year.

For LSU the 20-8 record while drawing 9,000 per game, and a second place finish to Kentucky his senior season was big news.  Almost up to the level of football.
Remember those days only the conference winner made the NCAA's.

The Kentucky fans looked down on the upstarts from Louisiana.  After all, Coach Rupp invented uptempo ball.
But after Maravich scored 115 in two games against them his senior season, they gave him a standing ovation.
And imagined how good he could really be if he was feeding the ball inside to Dan Issel.

Agreed, for what Markus has accomplished on and off the court the past four years should be really appreciated.
Hero ball?   Perhaps those making those accusations should go back to Norman Dale and his four passes rule and looking for Jimmy to pop wide open off the picket fence.  Or was it Merle off the picket fence?

For me Marquette has always been a "gold blood" as compared to a "blue blood" because of the many, man great players from Don Kojus, Walt Mangam, Tom Flynn, George Thompson, Blanton Simmons, Dean Memminger, Jerome Whitehead, Maurice Lucas, Jim Chones, Butch Lee, Sam Worthen, Travis Diener, Domnic James, Steve Novak, Jimmy Butler, Wes Mathews and now Markus Howard.  And there were many other greats not mentioned here.  In short, we have been blessed with one of the greatest basketball programs of all time. We are indeed a true "gold blood." And with the highly talented recruiting class next year we will continue to be "golden."
