Spooky. 42 years ago on the day of the NYC blackout. That resulted in looting and vandalism were widespread, hitting 31 neighborhoods. Possibly the hardest hit were Crown Heights, where 75 stores on a five-block stretch were looted, and Bushwick, where arson was rampant with some 25 fires still burning the next morning. At one point two blocks of Broadway, which separates Bushwick from Bedford-Stuyvesant in Brooklyn, were on fire. Thirty-five blocks of Broadway were destroyed: 134 stores looted, 45 of them set ablaze. Thieves stole 50 new Pontiacs from a Bronx car dealership.

In sharp contrast to 1965, which also had a major New York Power Outage.

What is it about New York and electricity?

You are all forgetting the massive North East blackout in 2003.

Happened LITERALLY outside my GF’s front door at 64th and West End. Was out to dinner and drinks, got the alerts, didn’t expect to come home to the block shutdown and a presser going on at 11PM. Actually impressed how fast they got power back on, fully intended to go and pack a bag and stay at her sister’s across the river in NJ for the night. Streets were still closed this morning/afternoon. Came back from brunch and had to be escorted by NYPD to the front door, after showing credentials, as DiBlasio and others had a press conference in the street out front. Podium was place and reporters were sitting on the ground, kind of funny

You are all forgetting the massive North East blackout in 2003.

I had a unique experience of that blackout.  I had taken the day off of work, and we took our kids to Idlewild Park about one hour East of Pittsburgh.  We had a nice day at the park, went to dinner and then let the kids swim and play in the hotel pool.  Nothing was amiss and we never accessed any media at all.  Once we got the kids to bed we turned on the TV and learned about the blackout for the first time.  For some reason the small town of Ligonier, PA and immediately surrounding area was completely unaffected.  I have no idea why.  It was a little strange being in a small unaffected pocket.

Before leaving the next morning we picked up a bunch of water and batteries and drove back home where we had no power.  I think we got power back later that day, but it might have been the next day.
