Title: Midwest Express is Back!
Post by: warriorchick on April 12, 2019, 10:15:01 PM
I remember back in the day when Al did the radio commercials.  Where's my chocolate chip cookie?

The old airline died exactly one week after I established my frequent flier account.

Flew to MKE whenever I could from LAX on ME.  It was fantastic, the last time I actually enjoyed flying.

Quote
So far, $750,000 has been raised from two unnamed investors, according to a report filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

That will get them some air in the tires of one plane.

Just this week I was describing to a 30 year old coworker flying ME getting meals on plates with silverware and the cookies. Oh, the cookies.

The look he was giving me made me think he either thought I was lying or that I was much older than he thought I was.

Yep.  I give 'em one in ten at getting one plane off the runway.

Their Brats and Kraut were the best. ...and yes the chocolate chip cookies. All first class seating if I remember.

Warm towels to finish the flight.

If they come back, it won't be with MD80's, that's for sure....fuel guzzlers that helped to seal the fate of the original airline when oil prices climbed.

Flew on the midwest Express bucks charter back from Vegas once.  The regular plane had mechanical issues, so they sent the charter.  It was sweet, but the chitters were still tiny.

Every time I go into a public restroom there is one guy in a stall taking a dump...are you that guy?

All these things (silverware, towels, decent food) are all standard on European airlines.

Our domestic carriers truly suck. I hope Midwest makes it.

It always confused me why people cared so much about the cookies. You are spending hundreds of dollars on a flight....and you are concerned about a cookie?

Things I care about on a domestic flight:
1. Cost
2. Time
3. How they assign seats
4. Ticket exchange/refund rules

.....

78. Food/Cookies - Take five dollars before you get on a flight and find a similar snack at the airport.

I agree with this.  They were Otis Spunkmeyer cookies.  Same cookies that most grade school cafeterias served up.  Oh, and Army bases.  Frozen dough.  Nothing special.

This.  And, I'm hoping a recent experience of ours will help my wife start considering No. 4 a little more and No. 1 a little less.  F'ing United.

I put it 4 because if I book, I usually am 95% sure I'm going. The extra cost to the flexibility usually isn't worth it. That said, booking with SW points and deciding 2 hours before your flight if you want to go or not is pretty empowering.

Never a fan of Midwest Express.
 -- Limited frequency
-- Didn't go to a lot of places I needed to go.
-- MD 80 leaked water on approach to Atlanta in a rainstorm.
 -- Cookies weren't any better than United's
-- United's first class was much better
-- Where were you going to go with MEX frequent flyer points? Kansas City?

Who flies airlines for the food anyway?

Yeah, me too.  My wife purchased a restricted ticket on United for our daughter for Easter break.  Then her coach told her she had to be back one day earlier than previously stated.  Doh!

The cookies were a nice touch, but I loved ME for the all first-class seating.  Reasonable legroom, and no need to wrestle with your seat opponent for the armrest.

As far as I’m concerned, they can toss the chocolate chip cookies out the window from 30,000 feet if they are able to maintain the seating they had.

They had a unique niche but it wasn't enough.  There's a limited number of ways to make money as an airline.  And while I'm no expert, nothing in the business model suggests they will going forward.  It's more nostalgia in my view.

The best quote about the airline industry was someone who asked how to make a million in the airline industry?

The answer: Start with a billion.

What matters to me as a very frequent flier:

1) Frequency
2) Service (do they really care about you)
    a) Friendliness
    b) Do they recognize your loyalty?
3) Access to first class at a reasonable price?
    a) Comfort
4) Scope of cities served (can I get to where I'm going in one stop or less, on the same airline?)
5) Maintenance (do their planes break down -- i.e., the 757-300 is a shop hog)
6) Is the wifi reliable?
7) Do they minimize use of their regional partners? (one would hope so)
