Title: OT; The American's new TV deal
Post by: The Lens on March 20, 2019, 01:10:23 PM
The AAC just signed a 12 year, $1 billion deal with ESPN.  Per school payouts will rise almost $5 million / year.  That's 4 times what they are getting now.

The caveat is ESPN is using their content to bolster ESPN+ so most basketball games will be shifted there.  In 5-7 years we may say who cares or what's the difference.

Good to see media companies continuing to invest heavily in non power 5 conferences.

I don't think UConn and UC will see it that way.

I thought the final number included ALL sports. Not that big a deal if that’s the case.

ESPN is trying to build up more live sports programming and less personality talking head programming.

Exactly. This could be the push UConn needs to figure out where their bread is buttered.

Interesting deal no doubt.  Is that $5 mil/year on par with BEast and Fox sports?  Just coined Sunday, CBS used the term Power 6 by the way, including the Big East in the 6 and not the AAC.  Good to see media finally realizing Power 5 only applies to football

No Grant of Rights required so Uconn and UC are free to leave, if anyone will take them.

As discussed yesterday, this is purely an ESPN+ play, same reason they went exclusive with UFC on Monday for PPV.  They are spending to prop up a new platform at the moment.
