Its a tough draw. Murray State is a good team. FSU is really tall and athletic. Vermont will have a ton of fans and if they make it to the second game it will be like a home game for them with the crowd.

It might be more important to keep Theo out of foul trouble.  Murray does most of their scoring at the rim.  They're 6th in 2pt%

Don't mind Murray. One stud and then what? They went 1-1 against Belmont and beat nobody else that matters.

Agreed with most on FSU, but when you're facing a top 12 team, it's not going to be easy regardless.

Go Vermont.

I actually dreamed about this bracket. A Murray State team that is Ja Morant and not a big depth or talent after.

Florida State lets a lot of inferior teams hang due to lack of scoring (see both games against Miami with Lykes). I think if we make it to 2nd game, we will be able to hang pretty well.

Gotta win against Murray, but this isnt the Racers team that Buzz faced--not near the talent level.
Title: Re: Sweet Sixteen Run
Post by: Marcus92 on March 17, 2019, 06:41:51 PM
Murray State has faced just one team ranked among the Top 40 by KenPom -- Auburn -- and lost. They also lost to #59 Alabama, #54 Belmont (at home) and #113 Jacksonville State. The Racers played 18 games against sub-200 teams; MU had just 5. Murray State's best win was against Belmont in the OVC conference tourney.

A good team, sure. But we've played and beaten far better teams  (Louisville, Kansas State, Wisconsin, Buffalo, Villanova, even Creighton) this season.

I'd expect Morant to get his, but I think Sacar can make it a very inefficient night for him. Key for us is that their three big men cannot shoot the three. They will have 2 of them out there at almost any given time which means our big guys can stay close to the rim and help.

In fact, they don't shoot the three well at all. Only 4 guys even capable of hitting the three, one of which makes less than 1 per game and 2 of which shoot around 33%. Make sure someone is in Tevin Brown's pocket and then pack the lane. Murray State lives in the paint which I think we can shut down.

I'm more worried about our offense going AWOL as it occasionally has this season, then I am about slowing the Racers down.

The biggest obstacle to marquette is marquette in this matchup. Feels like the St Johns game again. Sacar needs to frustrate Morant. But then interior needs to be big on 2pt defense.

I thought Markus had bad turnover games, but just went thru Morant’s games.  He is really turnover prone, he had 10 in a loss to Auburn.  Even against the poor OVC teams, he had games almost as bad.

His game stats are a double-double, but he was not playing against BE quality teams.  He can fly down the court though and some of his dunks are very, very impressive.

Murray State lives in the paint which I think we can shut down.

I was scanning through their opponents this year when I was preparing my preview for them on Cracked Sidewalks. They played only 4 teams all season with top-100 2PFG% defense and zero in the top-40. They haven't had to deal with anyone remotely like Theo John or Ed Morrow. They're going to score some points & Morant is going to put up numbers, but I don't see how they stop our offense. I think this will be a relatively comfortable win. The second round, on the other hand...let's just say I'll be rooting for Vermont.

MU had a very good recruiting class coming in with Tyshawn Taylor who then went to Kansas, along with the three Amigos playing.  Crean was very safe per my old colleagues that were still there.  Dick Strong has been long gone and the department doing just fine.

Maybe the "town" being referred to is Bloomington IN?

That is how I read it, actually, because I knew he didn't get chased out of Milwaukee.

I just saw Fla State beat Buzz in the ACC tournament. Very tough, hard-playing team with a couple of big-play guys. They crash the boards. Will be a heck of a test.

But that's how it's supposed to be when a 4 plays a 5. It's not supposed to be an easy game.

Murray State ... I haven't seen them play one second this season except for the Ja highlights I've seen on ESPN. Even though I'm an optimist, I'm also a bit of a worrywart (heck, I was worried about the DePaul game!), so I'm naturally worried about Murray State, too.

I just think we're overdue for some excellent play, and I'm actually quite encouraged by how we played vs. St. John's and vs. Seton Hall before the latter turned into a shyte-show. I think we're past "the worst."

Sweet 16? Sure ... I'm on board, baby!!

He also tried to leave for Illinois and a few others...he was pretty arrogant about letting people know he wouldn't be around MU too long.

On topic...MU with a 5 seed is great.  First game should be a win...one man show.  Second game will be interest if it's FL St....if we play as well as we have played at our best moments this year we can beat the vast majority of the teams in the tourney this year.

Sure, can I bring two former high ranking athletic department officials with me that were part of his hiring and remained connected through it all.   ;)

I have no doubt Strong had his opinions and I know very well he liked to throw his weight around, but the way I read your post is he was forced out of town....meaning if he didn't get the IU job he was out.  And I can tell you that is simply not true.  Maybe I read your post wrong, if I did I apologize.  That 2008-09 team was too loaded and to many good recruits coming in that they weren't going to mess with that.

MU beats Murray State by 9ish.

Florida State will be an issue, but it's a 4/5 matchup. Hoping Vermont can do MU a local favor, but unlikely.

FSU's length is frightening. They can easily smother Markus with Forest without giving up anything on the floor. FSU has turnover problems than MU could exploit and until the ACC tournament they've struggled on the road against quality opponents.

I think the dance ends there, but the game should be a pick 'em.

Wow - A little while ago, people were concerned we would get screwed with a bad seed. We got a five, and now everybody here is worried…

We got this.

The Thundering Herd Scoop Think!

I'm with you. I like this bracket. We make the second weekend.

Tired of this"uh oh" BS. we can beat these teams. after losing 5 of six a five seed is something I am content with. The NCAA is never easy. F*ck it. Embrace who we play. We CAN win. you don't wanna worry about losing? join the CBI or whatever the hell its called

Spot on. We're favored in game 1 and game 2 will be close to a pick 'em. After closing with 5 losses in 6 games we should be ecstatic (and excited). As Legs would say, doable. Let's do it, already!

Unlikely?  Unlikely?!?  It’s not unlikely until it’s not likely.

If you’re going to look forward to something, look forward to the Cats.

Great. Crean talk. Way to go guys, ever think about not being fu*kfaces for once?

C'mon, PTM. It's great to get all this information we didn't know about (unless we read 100 different threads over the years about the same thing).

Fair enough. That said, I just checked your last dozen posts and what have you added to the site? You tried running with ‘72 Dolphins with limited success.

What do you expect? PTM is one of those guys who is generally overlooked in life. insipid sums it up well.

By the way, did I miss the bukkake party?? Damn, I missed the orgies at Georgetown Prep and now this??

Appreciate the pub!

It's an interesting subject, but it's been beaten to death over the years. Anything and everything can be found out about Crean using "Search".

Yikes, I hope there's little truth to the Dick Strong story. Running out a coach because a donor is impatient is a terrible way to run a program.

Crean left based off his own decision. He did not like the heat, nor did he feel it was warranted, and made decision to leave. My comment to Cheeks on Crean being chased out of town, was directed at him. My bad, that it is out there for everyone.
Again, Crean left for many reasons, but getting heat from the guy who paid a lot of bills did not help the situation. In addition, I do not believe Strong wanted Crean to leave, he just wanted him to win in a bigger way.
