Title: How Many of Us Turned it Off?
Post by: TAMU, Knower of Ball on January 10, 2019, 02:22:10 PM
I did. Saw 0.6 on the clock and said it was over. Took me probably 10 minutes to realize what had happened. Honestly curious how many others were right there with me.

Bitter end kind of guy.  After all, it was just another road loss.   Oops.

I didn’t but not in a “I’m a better fan” type of way. I was just sitting on the couch sulking a bit and just happened to catch it.

Can’t blame anyone who turned it off especially after the timeout. Had it happened at home I imagine only 10-15% of people would have seen it. I would have left.

I mentioned this is another thread, but I DVR'd the game because I had a business meeting at 8.  I watched the first half live and watched the second half on DVR probably 20 minutes after.  I was within two minutes of being caught up and when we fell behind 85-80 so I fast forwarded the two minutes and noticed we were tied, so I rewound and watched the end.  So technically I didn't turn it off, but I really sorta gave up.

I had recorded it and was watching on delay. I was avoiding my phone throughout so I didn't see any spoiler text messages...until we were down three with .8 seconds left. I didn't turn off the tv, but did glance at my phone figuring the game was over and saw a "great Marquette game!" text. Hmmmm, that could mean a lot of things, but once the long pass went out of bounds I certainly suspected insanity ensued. Sure enough! Kind of bummed I saw the text because it  stole a bit of the elation of having no idea of what was coming, but just a bit.

As I said in a different thread, one time I did not tune out. Testing my wife updates kept me attention and very happy it did. The boys got lucky, but nothing wrong with stealing a game every now and then. To me, this is like "Nova game two years ago. What they do in next few games will tell a lot about this team. They sure as hell better riding high and build off last night.

Turned it off in disgust after Markus tried to drive and got rejected...around 8-9 seconds left.  Went out to walk the dogs, said goodnight to my son and then went upstairs to get ready for bed.  Looked to see what final score was and saw that the game had gone into OT.  Ran back downstairs and rewound the game to where I had shut it off and watched til the end.

Down 5 after we missed a 3 I changed to the Bucks game. They were also down so I turned the TV off but hit refresh on the game chat just in time to see DUNKS post: SAM!!!!!

Then it was chaos and confusion. Thanks for the heads up DUNKS!

Chick and I have walked out of games especially if it's a very late one.  Iowa comes to mind.  But we typically only do that if MU is down ugggee with several minutes to go.  I do think I stopped watching Indiana at some point and I don't set my life calendar to NEVER miss a game.  I didn't see Louisville this year as an example.

I told my wife that she could have the TV for whatever and said what a bummer it was they couldn't get over the hump. But we ended up watching what was supposed to be "to the bitter end." Both of us went nuts on the Hauser shot.

I had to watch on my phone, so I closed the app in frustration once it hit .6. I got a bunch of texts and turned it on in time to see the review of Sam’s shot.

Thought about it.  But it felt like there was finally going to be a bounce back from a deficit that would push us over the top.  Didn't come until the very end.

I turned the Johnnies game off with two minutes to go.  My daughter immediately started crying.

Probably would have flipped this one off too, but couldn't reach with her in my arms.

Four months old and she's already a better MU fan than me.  (She also swears a lot less.)

I always wait till the bitter.  But this time, turned off at the .06 and with CU's ball, no way to win. Can't win on the road, announcers not real good, switched to the Sopranos.  Googled for the score then stared open mouth trying to figure out How.  Switched to ENPS got the answer, then read all the posts.  Will we ever see that again.

After Chartouney fumbled around trying to make that layup, and I saw how little time was left, I turned it off.  I always check the box scores post game so after a few minutes I went to ESPN and saw us up like 4 points.  I was like come on guys, update your crap.  I checked another site and saw the same thing and went "this can't be".  Got game back on with like 2:35 left.   ;D ;D ;D

I'm a stay till the bitter end type of fan too.  Although I might leave a blowout loss game with a couple minutes left, I'll never turn off a 1 possession game.  I've seen too many crazy finishes to give up early on a close one.

I didn't turn it off, but when texting robmufan updates I told him the game was over when Creighton was in-bounding up 3 with 0.8 seconds left.

I turned it off in anger to put the kids to bed since I’d already kept them up late so that I could watch the game. Then I look at Twitter and see “Markus Howard with 11 straight points in OT” and immediately scrambled to figure out wtf happened.

^ this

I recall a Duke-MD game years ago that Duke was down 10 with under a minute, Coach K had been ejected and I think it was Jay (Jason at the time) Williams scored 10 points in a flash to send it to OT

I was watching the game on delay and was fast forwarding through a commercial break... went a bit too far and missed JC's missed layup/rebound/layup and the no touch inbound by Creighton.   It's only because of my error that I saw the .8 inbound for the tie... otherwise I can't say whether I would have turned it off or not!

At the time, I sure was pretty pissed that CBS Sports Network ran the commercial too long and caused us to miss the first 20 seconds of overtime.

I learned when my family was very close to leaving the Illinois/Arizona Elite 8 game with 5 mins, Illini down 15 that you do not under any circumstance shut it off until it is 20 points with under a min left.

Oh man, I remember that one. I was like 12 at the time. Went to bed early nearly in tears, woke up the next morning to an Illini win.

I shut it off.  Switched to the Bucks game.  During the Bucks game they ran a quick "Coming up on Sportcenter" thing where they teased the college player that just scored 53 points.  Didn't say who.  I wondered who could have put that up, figuring Markus finished with 39.

So I pulled out my phone and looked up college hoops scores.  Saw the OT win score and said "WTF??" very loudly while sitting alone in my living room.

I always root for the walkons. Drives me crazy when Wojo will not let them take a shot in the last 30 seconds. southern knew they were going to get killed before the tip. No reason to not let the walkons get their chance.

I had it DVR'd.  So I started watching about an hour late when I got home.  Around halftime, I got a few texts that spilled the beans that the result was a win.  I continued to watch without looking at anything more.  I have to say that I was pretty confident that the texts were intended to mess with me when Creighton was inbounding with .8 on the clock and MU down by 3.

Fun game to watch!!

I watched it with my brother, a Creighton alum. After Howard was stuffed he said, “sorry man, great game thot.” After the inbounds play he threw his hat. After the Hauser shot he threw his phone! Fortunately it didn’t break

Was coaching basketball, phone in hand watching the game. Saw the missed three when it was 80 to 85 with 2 seconds left. Put phone away, whipped it out to text someone at the end and saw marquette won by two. Queue me going wtf how for 15 minutes

I generally watch every MU game to the end win or lose, even if angry, but this one pissed me off so much that I turned it off when the announcers said “and Creighton is going to get a huge win over Marquette” before the inbounds pass. I figured there was 0.00001% chance they could win and figured they’d only win if they somehow stole the inbound pass and got a shot up but I figured I would just get more mad watching them fail at that attempt. I can’t believe how dumb Creighton was for throwing it the length of the court. Just throw it off someone’s leg under the basket and the game is over. I saw someone tweet “SAM HAUSER” right after I turned it off and thought “no f***ing way did Sam somehow just tie the game?” and turned it back on

my oldest son and i watch the game together via texting.  we were so busy bitching about this and that of the game, we both just left in on in the back ground. the usual, fire wojo, bench so and so, bad calls by the refs, etc etc and  then we heard the announcers in utter disbelief about the in bounds pass and hey, maybe we have something here....then the long wait on the replay.  because my sons feed was a little later than mine, i asked him-do you want me to tell you if they rule the shot good before your feed gives it to you?  and before he could answer, i could contain myself

Had allowed my 8 year old son to stay up late since game was so close much to the chagrin of the wife.  He insisted game wasn't over when .6 was left on clock and had the remote and was literally dodging around while I tried to take it from him and turn off tv.  Very glad he is a quick little bugger.  Was dumbfounded when the inbounds went awry and just in shock when Sam made shot.  By then wife and daughter watching too all of us going crazy. What a night...

Yeah this drives me nuts.  In the old days when games were decided the end of each bench would be on the floor for the last few minutes playing regular basketball trying to impress the coach.  More fun than just standing and dribbling out the clock.  I think the three point shot keeps the guys on the bench longer because crazy comebacks are more possible now.  But when you're up 30 with 3 minutes to go, let the end of the bench guys in.  I think part of the problem is that the teams getting killed leave their regulars in, too.

I turned it off when there were . 6 seconds left.  The announcers had basically called it.  It wasn't until about 10 minutes later when I checked my phone and saw it went to overtime.  I had trouble finding a replay of the Creighton turnover that gave the ball back to MU.  All of the highlights I saw didn't include that play.   How is that possible? all they needed to do was inbound the ball and game over.  I never saw the play.

That's great.  And, once again, if he'd just tossed the ball to Theo, they'd have won.  Honestly, there's a chance Theo wouldn't have even scored because he was right on the baseline behind the backboard.

Since we had no timeouts I wonder why Wojo even guarded the inbound considering a toss to Theo ends it??

Like a couple others, I will walk away from a game when we're down by 20 with 3 minutes to go or something. But no, I wouldn't (and didn't) walk away from a close game like this with that little time left.

My little brother turned it off, though. When he told me about it, I laughed my arse off. Happened to check his phone about 10 minutes later and couldn't believe it was in OT. Went back to watching it.
