Title: What to do during the day?
Post by: #UnleashSean on September 13, 2018, 09:14:47 PM
I'm out of work for 3 months, have zero use of my right hand. I've watched literally anything on netflix of any interest. I can't drive, I'm going nuts. Yall got any ideas for what I can do?

Use your left hand

Seriously, though, that is awful. Doesn't sound like you have the ability to do anything remotely toolsy. Pick a random topic and just spend a ton of time becoming an expert about something you knew a sliver about before

What happened unleashed?  Did you get injured?

Sorry to hear that.

I had spinal surgery a few years back. Was out of work for a month and it drove me C-R-A-Z-Y!!!! I watched the old Hawaii 5-0 until I could count the hairs on Jack Lord's head and I knew by heart how large Kono's waistline was.

Best advice is to deal with it as best you can. Get in touch with your family, close friends and others close to you. Use the time to reflect. Heck, I'd even tell you to go to daily Mass once and awhile if this were a Catholic Board! LOL.

Seriously, use it as a time for yourself and your family.

Ya, at my buddies rental company I work for as a side job, some joker messed up and dropped a 500 pound bounce castle on me. Fell out of a box truck and broke my wrist. Complete break, got a plate and screws put in. Now dealing with nerve damage that has basically numbed my hand and severely limited the movement.

Haha, you should see the amount of dents I put into a wall while screwing in shelves in my kitchen only using my left hand on a power drill.

Started yesterday!

Should have sold when I was up 3 dollars. If you have any tips let me know (https://i.gyazo.com/d645886fd279e8a00ccca734ebf36474.png) I can never get images to work on this board.

My only advice is don't ask for advice on day-trading from anonymous interwebs peeps.

Having been laid off from a job and gotten to live off severance for a bit I have some experience in this topic. One hand will be tricky though.

Cook: Try making meals for dinner or lunch that you've always wanted to make but seemed like they'd be too long to make when you're tired after work.

Exercise: I get it one hand, but there's something you can do. Whether it's side planks, wall sits, walks. Getting the blood pumping makes an hour go by quick.

Clean: Personally it had been ages since I got rid of junk, go through your clothes and random crap that's been accumulated and get that stuff over to goodwill or salvation army.

Read: It's a forgotten skill

Classes: Udemy courses are cheap and there's something to improve your skillset on there.

Other random long term projects: Brewing, pickling, distilling, make your own sauces, smoking (the cooking kind), art, repaint a room (smaller brush to make less mistakes), organise computer files/delete old files.

Last but not least get amazon prime and you'll have a whole new collection of movies and shows to browse through.

Superb post, GE.

After I was laid-off, it took me a little while to find my stride. But I'm very rarely bored any more. So much to do, so little time! Life is good.

Exercise is an especially great suggestion.

Dude. Hit the road and TRAVEL. Don’t know how old you are but if you don’t have a family relying on your presence, get going! Who knows how many times in your life you’ll get a long stretch of time to do that.

You can find super cheap flights to Southeast Asia, where good travel is cheap. Or go to Europe, offseason prices should make it reasonable (especially Italy and Spain). I can’t imagine your injury precludes you from getting on a plane So GET ON A PLANE.

And/or hop in your car if you can drive, and chase the autumn leaves, visiting national parks along the way—start in Colorado with the aspens and then drive into the northeast, then down the coast (or go west and drive Seattle-San Diego, an immensely incredible drive across three or four weeks).

Only your imagination will limit you.

L 5. I had a walnut sized tumor growing between my backbone and my spinal cord. It haad to be removed or I would have lost my ability to feel anything below my waist.

It was several years ago and a complete success. The pain I had at the time is gone. The pressure on my spine is gone and there has been no recurrence.

The cooking suggestions were good ones. Especially for the things that are time intensive and usually out of the question for that reason.

For a few years I had a ton of time driving for work and ripped through a bunch of podcasts (for starters, The History of Rome, and Revolutions Podcast are great).

The travel suggestion is pretty good too but doesn't need to be big. Pick a weird part of town and hit up a townie bar/local dive food and see what is to offer in your own neck of the woods.

Learn a new language.

That's not a bad one.

Are you mobile or home restricted?  If mobile, really get to know a museum. There are also free walking tours in every city, so see your city as a visitor but go on multiple tours to stay social. Go to a criminal court and follow a trial.  Volunteer coach.

I was off work while I had 2 herniated discs C2/C3 and C3/C4). That sucked. I did my best to stay active within my limits (a lot of walking around my city), tried new restaurants, a lot of reading, watching some TV (this was pre-Netflix though) and volunteered.  Getting out of the house is important, even if just means taking your laptop or tablet to a Starbucks and spending a few hours there.

Try volunteering, most major cities have agencies to match you.  Local Boys and Girls Club, after school programs, youth athletic leagues...

Maybe also try learning new skills, like a web or a computer program like Excel, Final Cut Pro, Salesforce...

remember, OP can't drive or use his right hand.  that limits a lot of the above options.

Invite a buddy over for left hand arm wrestling. If you can, try thumb wrestling with your right.

My brother-in laws was completely disabled by an auto immune disease. The loss of his hands was the worst part. Get well soon.

If you can write with your left hand, I think you'd get a lot of satisfaction about writing a check to me for, oh, $50K or so!

Fusion? Interesting. I had always thought you were younger - 30s-40s. Would have suggested disc replacement instead

I'm not sure disc replacement was as prevalent when I had ACDF... I was only in my low 30's and looking at disc replacement stuff online now, I probably was an ideal patient for it, but yeah... did ACDF. Hoping the rest of the levels hold up. Occasionally playing ball I'll run into a mean screen or take an arm to the head and get worried for a second, but so far, so good.

I feel for you. I fractured my right ankle a month ago, so no driving for me either. I have become friends with Lyft and took public transit (Chicago) this past week for the first time. Getting down to one crutch has made more things possible. I do find I am spending too much time surfing the net.

Decided to bring back this long dead thread.

Had what would hopefully be a final surgery 4 months ago, yesterday finally swung a bat with no pain since August of 2018!
